Was reading some goalkeeping footballing stuff on the internet and came across this little nugget of information... “Portsmouth's Alan Knight lost several pairs of goalkeeper gloves at the end of an away game against Huddersfield Town in October 1981 when an opportunist fan jumped over the pitchside wall, pulled his glove bag through the back of the net and scarpered off with them. To make matters worse, one of the policeman on duty helped the thief back over the wall, unware a crime had been committed“ Is this a true urban-legend? Anyone remember it if so? Anyone on here owning up? An interview with Alan Knight recalling the incident... You experienced a glove bag and its contents being stolen from the net, what were the circumstances?“I vaguely remember it was an away game somewhere, Huddersfield I think and when I went back into the net at the end of the game it had gone. I guess someone had jumped over the barrier and helped himself whilst play was up the other end. I suppose if he has still got it he could send it back via the club that would be great and I will stick them on ebay as I am sure they must be worth something now!“![]() ![](https://i.postimg.cc/PxN2V6Jq/763-BCA2-F-332-D-4-E3-E-BE2-F-1817-A2-D20378.jpg)

Anyone on here owning up? Remember it well, it’s been discussed on here recently, the game in question he got dogs abuse, at first he laughed it off, even turned round to conduct the Cowshed crowd at one point, as it continued he started to find it less funny and finally snapped. But it was ex Fulham keeper Peter Mellor with Pompey, not Alan Knight.

How much does he think they’d fetch on eBay I wonder? A goalkeeper few outside of Portsmouth (and Epsom terrier) will have heard of. £20 if he’s lucky I would have thought.

MT’s your man for this sort of stuff but I’d say this was the 79/80 promotion season where Pompey where one of our rivals. The era of keepers getting their gloves nicked, people climbing floodlights & lino’s getting twatted. Was easy to hop over the wall & then jump back in again & get swallowed up by the crowd in those days before stewards & dibble knew what was happening.

But it says Alan Knight was the keeper, he was Pompey keeper for donkeys years but he was after Mellor. Just looked at wiki and he holds the record for appearances for a single club by a keeper.

What I always remember about the pompey keeper, was every time he kicked the ball out of his hands he'd stepped out of his area but it was never spotted.
