And wolves away. Beckford came on as sub after weeks out. Incredible last half hour with him and Vaughan tearing them apart. Went 3-1 up then it all kicked off. Great away day Don't do a lot of away days but I remember going to that game. Went by train, even though I don't drink much on match days, and walked to Molineux from the station. We seemed to be miles up in the gods in the stadium and at half time I got talking to an old dear that had been supporting Town a long time and told me of going to away games on the 'football specials' in the 50's. Was in the top tier too for this and it started lashing down, I was right in the last outer seat exposed to the elements, got soaked.

Given his age, injury worries and loss of pace I’m surprised we haven’t given him a 3 year retirement plan.
He did very well to have such a long career given his frailties. Such a shame they robbed him of a career at the highest level.

Vaughan & Beckford decent frontline I always remember Town v Millwall in which Beckford scored a great goal from a really acute angle , I think it was 2013, we won 3-0 , and Vaughan & Beckford terrorised the Millwall defence all afternoon.

I remember that game. You are right, they worked brilliantly together. Nothing better than seeing a twin strike force running defenders ragged. I remember feeling a lot of trepidation when we signed Beckford, for obvious reasons but he won me over after 5 minutes.

A straight forward front pairing is seen as old-hat these days, how many Teams play this way now?. I am all for it and think many Clubs, ourselves included are missing a trick not reverting to a straight 4-4-2. I am sure we would be better defensively and score more goals. Coaches and Managers are over-thinking things too much these days, keep it simple.

As with anything, it will take a club to reintroduce a forward pairing and be successful with it , for others to then copy it. All this false 9 stuff leaves me cold.

Yes i remember that game and goal, talk about acute finishing, must have had barely millimetres to play with, never has the phrase through the eye of a needle been more apt.

The problems all began when teams abandoned the tried & tested 1-1-8 formation. Switching to that modern 2-3-5 defensive rubbish ruined the game.

JV was a signing at the time that I never thought we could afford. When Beckford came along it seemed the perfect pairing. Perhaps we should have done much better with those two. Over the last 10 years JV, JR and Nahki have been our standout strikers.

I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't try to make a comeback has a boxer.

Completely agree. Burnley are the only ones I can think of and it’s not done them any harm over the last few years. It takes a very good CF to play the lone striker role. Far too easy to be isolated, midfielders lose confidence and become over-defensive so don’t run in behind. I always think poorer teams need 2 up to have any sense of threat or an outlet. Look at us in the dying days of Wagner’s reign, we never had anyone within 30yds of our front man. The midfield sat deep and teams could play as high as they liked without fear that f us turning their defence. Sadly, we didn’t have the personnel to do it as we lacked pace and a natural finisher. We’d have definitely kept teams ‘more honest’ though.

Vaughan and Beckford were a proper handfull. We all know he was made of glass, but on his day, and he had a few of them for us, Vaughan was almost unplayable. The best strike force in my time supporting Town - shame they played together on so few occasions.

Vaughan on his day was unplayable. Those two games against Wolves really stand out. He ripped Roger Johnson to shreds, in the first game in particular. He couldn't live with Vaughan's power, movement and pace.
All the best to the lad. A committed, determined striker who I really wish had never had the injuries - at least after he joined us (as he'd never have joined us without them). Yes, he was prone to daftness (I recall him clattering the Middlesbrough goalkeeper once, not getting sent off but ruling himself out for about 3 months), but he was also a natural goalscorer who, even playing with the handbrake on as he has in his later career, has continued to knock in goals by the hatful.
