Over the last couple of seasons I’ve been compiling an easy to look at paper sheet of Town’s close season signings. Included is Date signed / Players name / Age / Former club / Position / Fee Paid / Country. This season we’ve been operating early in securing signings in comparison to previous seasons ( last season is not practical due to late finish). In 2019 the first signing was Tommy Elphick on 15/6 followed by Brown 20/6, Koroma 21/6, Brockhorn 8/7, Mbenza 9/7, and Campbell 12/8, and a couple of loan players in Gabara 15/7 and Chalobah 8/8.
In 2017 (I’ve lost the 2018 info) the first was Laurent Deportire 23/6 followed by Mooy 30/6, Ince 4/7, Williams 4/7, Mounie 5/7, Malone 5/7, Jorgensen 7/7, Sabiri 23/8, and Green 27/8. Loans were Palmer 4/6, Lossl 30/6, and Hardergjonaj.
This close season we’ve got in early and signed Matty Pearson 20/5, Jordan Rhodes 24/5, Lee Nichols 26/5 and Ollie Turton 3/6. All signings are a risk of course, but I think it’s good to see Town get in there early and secure the signatures of the players that Carlos has identified. It means that no other potential predators can swoop in and nick them from HTAFC. The early bird catches the worm as they say... !

I think you've missed 2018 when we signed Ramadan Sobhi early doors (not to mention what followed). That was more a case of the early bird catching the turd, than the worm.

Without being negative I can’t see there having been much competition at championship level for the signings we’ve made. But just anything that resembles a competent goalkeeper and even a league 1 standard back up for right back is an improvement on last year. Hopefully we can pull another Mooy or two out of the bag in coming weeks. This assumes we don’t lose any of our better players. Still think we need real quality CB, CDM, AM and ST before we can even hope for a top half finish.

At the minute I'm completely underwhelmed. But I'll wait until I've seen them play to pass judgement on our prospects.

I think our early transfer business has been great and adds to the starting 11 and squad overall. If it wasn’t for injuries to key players before Christmas we’d have been fine last season and going off our strengthening so far the club has realised our failings and are trying to put them right by strengthening in key areas and it’s not over yet. If the majority are freebies then so be it as the transfer market is full of quality out of contract players.

There is a team there that can play, we have seen it.
Let's wait and see if we firstly add some more consistent team performances before we write off any new signings.
The solid consistent additions might allow more from Koroma and others to come to the fore more often?
Simply cant play as long in football matches without anything positive happening, in the future. Long, long periods of passing to nothing and being so comfortable before dropping huge bollocks and going behind, it was annoying at best. Some solid workers who stay switched on might help some of that?

I'll be even more impressed if we sign someone for a fee early on Why? Has the past couple of years not taught us that fee means nothing?

I'll be even more impressed if we sign someone for a fee early on Why? Has the past couple of years not taught us that fee means nothing? I seem to recall Herr Wagner doing his business early doors before they all shipped off to Sweden to eat rotting fish, and we all know what happened after that. I think freebies are great but your resource pool is limited, when you're prepared to splash a little cash, your resource pool is widened and you'll surely find it easier to find that key player who maybe the final piece in the jigsaw. You may get lucky with freebies but the reality is that if they are that good they are likely to be going to bigger clubs than us.

I do agree, but there have been some quality players available on a free over the years, and no fee means higher wages can be afforded. But the erly signings are more likely to be free because they are out of contract, or refusing to sign a new one. Anyone that costs a fee is likely to be held by the existing club until they line up a replacement.
