I’ve a substantial amount of A4 sized pics of Leeds Road that I look out for nostalgic reasons from time to time (though sadly I never had the privilege of getting to a match there) Of course Denis is always linked with the floodlights there with his sale funding them. Before my time but thank you Denis for all your illuminating performances in a Huddersfield Town jersey....

There has been plenty written over the years about the skinny, 16 year old from Aberdeen with a squint. What is not recorded is that his dad was very wary of letting his lad go south to a foreign country and a town he'd never heard of. At the time, the club had many Scottish (including Aberdonian) connections and these were assembled to good effect in the bar of the George Hotel where Mr Law was plied with sufficient comfort to persuade him to give his permission.

It is a very common disease actually. 80% of all 80 year old people are dementing. At 90 all are to some extent. A difficult disease but mostly one of ageing. My mum will be 98 in November, physically she’s slowing down but thinks nothing of walking a mile or so into Birstall, and mentally she is still as sharp as a tack. No suggestion that she’s struggling in any way mentally, her memory is incredible, so I’m not sure I agree with your comment above. She has always kept herself active, physically and mentally, and that is the key. Her only problem is her deafness. It is all by degree i assure you. ALL 90 years olds on the planet are dementing somewhat. Every last one. If we lived long enough the brain would give out. I know two world leaders on the subject and thats what they tell me.

No two people are the same. It's fair to say that the brain functions less well with age but many can cope with that and live a happy life. As an example Captain Sir Tom still seemed pretty sharp after turning 100.

You can function whilst dementing. A simple example in reverse would be a child. They may function well before reaching full brain development at around 23. Were Sir Tom physically fit at 100 i doubt he would have had the capacity to provide for himself. The jury is still out but lots of new research is showing brain decline is incremental with age for almost everyone. It is just different increments.

With respect, that is nonsense. OK, my mum isn’t 100, but she is nearly 98 and lives on her own in her own house, has no problem getting up and down the stairs, still tends her garden and walks to the shops, to her craft classes and to her church etc. Naturally she’s slower than she used to be, has her naps, and can rely on my sister (who lives near to her) to help out, and the neighbours also look out for her, but she is still well capable of “providing for herself” as you put it. As could Sir Tom, I suspect, though obviously he was fortunate to be able to live with his daughter and her family (although I understand he had his own living space).

Exceptions to every rule of course. Very, very few 100 year olds in Britain could survive 48 hours alone. Probably different in Japan.

(was going to include the chemical and piss stench from the terrace urinals , but thought it would spoil the experience)..

Never saw this when it came out . Good vid, and great to see Beck lane down Hecky briefly featured, along with spen beck referred to as a stream...along with some ducks.

Just walked passed Beck Lane along the Greenway a few minutes ago. The pitch is literally a lake!

I seem to remember I walked from home in Newsome to the top of Kilner Bank to see if I could see any of the game. Could hear the noise but Kilner was never much cop for seeing the action.

All the best to you Dennis, an absolute Town legend. To all those talking about class, I'd point out that in his own autobiography, he pointed out how shocked he was on that first transfer to city.. Coming from Town, where the kit was all on pegs, boots polished etc etc, he was absolutely amazed that the shirts at city were all in a pile on the floor, for you to find your own......his words, not mine. They're still classless to this day, and I maybe in a minority preferring Man U.Travelled with three of their supporters to the game when we beat them, they of course typical Man U fans from Sunderland, but even when they found me again on the way back, still plied me with booze. City fan threatened to push me under a train after I said it was a fluke Sterling's goal went in off his arse. Anyway got off topic, Dennis you were a star and a perfect gent, for all the teams you played for. Hope you and your family cope and enjoy life as best you can.

I think that what he's saying is it is in many cases the luck of the draw. Your mum being the age she is, is like saying a smoker who's lived to a 100 proves there's no cause and effect. Look, as we age, everything becomes more possible, dementia, cancer, kidney failure and so on. Clearly some things affect the chances, heading a football being one for dementia. For everyone we hear about though, there will be "headers" out there who didn't get dementia, and some who did. Your mum has done well, but no one knows how or why. You can tinker with the odds, but you can't beat them.
