Well, the Championship play-off chasers have earnt a shot at some PL big boys in this 2nd round cup tie v Everton. But in how far Town’s side will resemble their normal starting line-up is anybody’s guess. Everton have made a decent start to their campaign with a draw at Leeds and win v Southampton. They, too, could be forgiven for not putting out their strongest 11. Although, Benitez has surprisingly never won the league cup, Liverpool won it a year or so before he came in 2004 and just after he left in 2010, so he might not want to dip out on winning the thing this time and put out a very strong 11, who knows?
Tough ask for Town, it has to be said.

At least these games are settled on the night, so here’s hoping for some drama…

Already lost to Everton twice at this stage of the competition (1998/99 - over two legs - and away in 2010/11) link

I was really looking forward to this one - cup tie against good opposition under the lights with no pressure and hopefully a good performance.
Of course, that was before recording a positive LFT yesterday. PCR yet to come back, but in all likelihood I'll not be there tonight or on Saturday against Reading. Very frustrating, to say the least.

Everton sold out their allocation for half the South Stand, apparently, so that'll be 2000 away fans. How many have we sold so far? Hope it's a good crowd, match being shown live in Germany again on DAZN.

Difficult to see how we could win this one in all honesty. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if Everton finished top 6 and won the League Cup, its a competition that's alluded them. Depends how serious Benitez is in winning it, he delivers trophies.
Edit: Didn't Benitez win this trophy at Chelsea?....no he didn't, just checked.

Pick a strong side, or pick the kids/project players? My answer = a bit of both. Filling the side with kids seems pointless. They'd get smashed, and even if we were against a poor lower division side, they won't learn as much playing alongside fellow kids as they would alongside senior pros.
If Schofield's confidence wasn't shot to pieces, this is the sort of game I'd be looking to play him in. I would like to see a run out for Diarra OR Sinani (or maybe one starts & the other off the bench) in this one. A run out for Ben Jackson, at least off the bench? Depending on his form in the youth side, maybe Harratt gets a run out off the bench? I wouldn't be looking to play more than 2 or 3 kids at a time, but this could be an immensely useful exercise for our most promising youngsters.

I’d start some of: Toff (half a game for fitness) Diarra Sinani High Nichols Ward (really needs a goal!)

Nicholls
Turton Pearson Colwill Sarr Toffolo
Hogg O’Brien
Thomas Koroma
Campbell
Would be my team, the one that finished the game on Saturday. Unless, any are fatigued then of course rest them. But a lot of them have missed games from Covid/rotation and it’s still early on in the season so I say let’s have a good go. Liked the 5 at the back and against a strong Everton team, will be more about trying to hit on the counter through Thomas & Koroma.

Can’t see us getting anything but a positive performance would certainly add to the boost in confidence from the win on Saturday

Can’t see us getting anything but a positive performance would certainly add to the boost in confidence from the win on Saturday That's what this is, a competitive game we are not expected to get much from but carrying on working hard in defence and making the most of any attacks cant hurt. Cup games like this are to be enjoyed by the team and the fans. The more we enjoy it the better the result.. We cant lose points but there is pride and the chance to pit yourself against premier players, so there is something to lose. Give it a good go..

Nichols Turton Lees Colwill Toffolo Vallejo Diarra O’Brien Sinani. Ward. Aarons.

Be nice to see one or two of these academy lads given a few minutes alongside some first team regulars. Every time I've seen Diarra he's looked good while playing alongside mostly second string players, so let's see how good he looks alongside our better players.
Camara & Bright too, let's give em more than 30 seconds at the end of the game.

Unless anyone is carrying an injury, just play the best team. There's a game on Saturday and then a 2 week break to have a 'rest'.

As long as Nichols starts I have faith we can give them a good game. Might go down by the odd goal but reading Rafa’s cryptic interview he won’t be risking many true first teamers.

any idea of where folk can watch it if they can't make it to the game? It's one of only two League Cup games on hesgoal.com tonight. The other is Barrow vs Aston Vile.

Id like a mix of youth and experience having a go at the prem team.
I would like to see some minutes for Jackson, Diarra, Jones and Harratt.
Either that or experiment a little with the tactics.

Is the rope walk still open? It’s my sons first game tonight and fancied getting a quick bite before the game without walking into town. If not, any other recommendations? Pizza Hut?

Impossible to tell until you see the line up they put out - and us for that matter eg doubt Ricarlison, Pickford will play
Often shocks at this point of competition such that it’s not really a shock
I expect them to play a fairly strong team but will have changes

The Benitez interview I saw suggested he was not going to play a lot of his first team, although he wouldn't say as much of course - "injuries, Covid, busy schedule etc".

That's the potential for an absolute hammering. I'd rather we played our first team and tried an alternate formation maybe. Playing youth against these, who might have mostly first teamers is asking for an arsing. Will not come across well to those that have paid
