Absolutely staggering! They’ll have to shift an awful lot of shirts. Juventus sold 850,000 shirts in total throughout the 2016/17 season. When Ronaldo signed they sold 520,000 shirts, with his name on, in the first 24 hours.

Sponsorship deals will rise (bet teamviewer are delighted) And as mentioned, lots of fans these days, particularly overseas, will follow a player. So if that brings just say 1m new MUTV subscriptions = about $35m a year Ronaldo has more instagram followers than every prem club added together...which is just incredible. he's bigger than the PL Latin america (where many of his followers will be from) is a huge market to crack for utd, as most support the big 2 in spain. attracting a new generation of fans over there not only brings new fans but also a better chance of attracting top latin talent, which has always been an issue for them. Financially its a no brainer. Footballing wise he will still be world class for 3 years imo. Body of a freak

The media frenzy will now ensue. Yes it’s a big story, but feck me, they don’t half go overboard with this stuff nowadays. The only thing I’ll be interested in, is seeing how a very good player, but one heading into his late thirties, will cope with what can be a very tough league. It feels more like a marketing ploy than a good signing for building your team around for the next few seasons. It's difficult to really conceive how big he and Messi are: I still remember him as a spotty youth with 'worms' in his hair. He's a global icon that transcends football. The only occasion I've seen him live was at Basel vs Real Madrid in the Champions League a few years ago. That game had to be stopped on four separate occasions due to youngsters running on the pitch just to try and touch Him. There was a genuinely messainic air about it - everybody was there to watch him (apart from me who was there because it was free). Utd will have no trouble monetising the fervour that surrounds him, and it will be a welcome boost to the global profile of their brand which has slipped slightly in recent years. The boost he will give them on the pitch is a bonus. I hope you're joking. Man Utd are a loathsome entity. They were the first club to really rinse football for monetary reasons. No surprise to see them involved in the new European project which thankfully flopped ignominiously.

It's all down to Ole now isn't it. If he can't win the league with the investment they've put in this season getting Ronaldo, Sancho and Varane, he'll be gone. Not convinced by Sancho. Think there's a good chance he could flop Obviously it's still early on and could need some time to get used to the Prem style but looked questionable again at the weekend v Wolves (who if they had someone that could put the ball in the net would have drubbed united about 6-0)

It predominantly is all about money. The days of the pink paper and the footy special are long gone, it has evolved and fans either evolve with it or find a new hobby.

He sells shirts m'lord, he sells shirts Not arguing with you, honest, just pondering. Does this really sell many MORE shirts, or switch the name on the back from a different player? i.e. "I was going to buy a Man U shirt with Maguire on the back but now I'm buying one with Ronaldo on it" Not even Slabheads mum would get a shirt with Maguire on the back 😁

Modern football is weird! And barely one of them will have ever been to a game

He’s the 🐐 Looking forward to seeing him play in the PL again. Messi has signed for PSG they don't play in the PL? From a 2/3 team league to a 1 team league, he really knows how to push himself

Utd will get little from the extra shirts. Its a big urban myth. They get a load from the manufacturer up front and then commission on each shirt sold.
Commission is around the 10% mark. To make £20m for Utd - which in the scale of this deal isn't that much - they would have to sell over 2m MORE shirts than they otherwise would have.

If Rochdale had offered him a deal on more money, he would have gone there. Same goes for Messi. I always chuckle when Players (or their agents) state that a Player wants a move for Champions League football for example. No they don’t, and don’t try and fool the football fan in the street. They would play Albanian 3rd division football if the wage and signing on fee was there.

'I came here becasue i want to win things' has been a common mantra in the past, what they really mean is 'I came here becasue my outrageous wage demands were met'.

Generally speaking, yes a player might go where most money is, but Ronaldo is an extremely wealthy man who gives plenty of it away. He's driven to win probably more than any footballer on the planet. I dont think he would have gone to utd if he didnt think he could win trophies, and certainly wouldnt just go to the highest bidder regardless of who they are. I'm sure he could have got more in china

Agree to a point. but the case with William at arsenal alleged to have torn up his very lucrative contract and forgone all the extra he could have got so he can go play in Brazil. Yes he's made a mint but he really could have screwed arsenal over and sat it out but he wants to play for a certain club so has made sure by facilitating by what ever means to do it.

I think you are underestimating the effect of this guy. He has 315m Instagram followers (the most popular person on the app/website) and 94m Twitter followers (5th most popular). It's been 12 years since he left United so that's a LOT of people who haven't had the chance to buy a "RONALDO 7" shirt. They will get through 2m in no time.

And remember, this is 2m more than they would have otherwise sold. Without a doubt people will get the shirt because he has gone there. But others will decide to get his name and number on the back rather than someone else's and therefore shouldn't count towards the figure.

Imagine. Utd realise they have to shift these shirts quickly due to demand. That induces a manufacturing defect. Cue several hundred thousand people around the globe, going round with 'Ronald' on the back of their shirts...

Nice bloke really, he must have had a lifetime of it… Went to a funeral a few years ago at the crematorium. We were queuing where the flowers and times of the following funerals were. The one after was someone called George Ronald Mcdonald. I was really hoping all the mourners would be clowns. Imagine the massive shoes sticking out of the coffin and the hearse doors falling off 🤣

Will Cavani have to give up his shirt number ? I reckon they’ve sold James for £25m which pays for Ronaldo and frees up the 21 shirt for Cavani which then lets Ronaldo have the 7

I don’t think this will count as exceptional.
