At 1.30 today, Hearts become the biggest fan owned club in British history.
Doesn’t matter what club you support, the true fans are their lifeblood...

The club I mainly went to watch when I lived in Edinburgh - even though I lived stones throw from Easter Park.
Great fans and they have one of the best football anthems.

I’m sure the stag do in Edinburgh will be pretty awesome Durham, but I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the footy and Tynecastle as a stadium. Livingston is probably equidistant to the west of Tynecastle as Hibernian’s stadium is to the east so that should spice things up a bit.
Not that I’ve been to Tynecastle for a match or support Hearts or anything like that, but I met Neil Lennon once in a pub in Glasgow and obviously football was among the main topics of the day. Now Lenny is a guy on the pitch who loved a scrap and I asked him what was the most atmospheric stadium he’d ever played in given his career took him to most in The uk at both lower level and the very top and also in Europe.
Fully expecting his answer to be maybe Ibrox he said no as the pitch is a bit away from the players longways. Lenny said without a doubt his favourite ground was Tynecastle Park, steep stands, one tiered, the perimeter in touching distance of the players, hearing the personnel insults, he loved it, his only complaint was one thug that took it to far and vaulted the barrier and attacked him and was found NOT PROVEN... ah good old Scottish justice at it’s finest...
The stadium is almost 100% symmetrical in fact it would be had they not put the centre line and tunnel to one side of the half way line, however that apart it looks really slick indeed.
On another note, the lad that did the piping at ma late daddy’s funeral in 2006 is a massive Jambos fan and while we paid the piper (final bill) so to speak, I wanted to get him a wee personal gratituity and went to the club shop to get him a bottle of Hearts vodka and a club crested glass for drinking it.
It turned into a pleasant day, got the necessary goods, went to the local stadium pub, The Tynecastle Arms, had a few in there (The local slang for the team is “The Hertz” ) and went on my way. At the main route west to Glasgow by bus,I met this lassie who was going to work at a ‘bar’ now, I don’t need much persuading to do pub crawls of any town or city and of course I went along with her into Edinburgh city !
Turns out she worked at Burke & Hare a pub - cum lap dancing venue and plenty flesh to see although unlike Burke & Hare fortunately it was live flesh ! So I took public transport to Edinburgh’s ‘pubic’ triangle..got pissed seen public hair and took pubic transport back to Glasgow or that’s the way it felt at the end or the night !
They have been through the mill have Hearts (with a Russian crackpot called Romanov) and are probably well placed in the hands of the supporters.. Enjoy your stag weekend Durham, as I say, the stadium might be better than you anticipate, and for sure as I found out Edinburgh is full of pleasant surprises !!!!

Have to agree with westislandterrier, Tynecastle is a pretty good ground nowadays, and the atmosphere is usually pretty good. I used to go to Heriot-Watt University fairly often, which is also that side of town, and got to a few games at Tynecastle. One of the first games I saw there was a night match against Rangers during the 1980’s and it was a fantastic match. The ground was completely different to nowadays but was still a proper football ground. One other thing, it is (or was, not sure) right next to a brewery, so the smell around the ground could be pretty distinctive at times.

I went up Calton Hill, but could only see Easter Road,I wonder if Edinburgh Council would consider knocking the castle down, maybe it would be possible to view Tynecastle then.

Edinburgh is a great city with a really interesting history, well worth a visit. Hope it works for Hearts and I like the idea of fans being more involved in the football club, lets see how it goes.

Any fans whose idea of supporting a Scottish club doesn't involve one of many inter-city buses into Glasgow are alright by me. Almost as bad as Cockney Man U or Cornish Liverpool fans.

Good for them. Strange though isn't it, of the Edinburgh clubs, Hibs has always been my choice. Who the hell can't like "Sunshine on Leith" by The Proclaimers. It almost makes you feel like you're there. ( And I can't stand their leftie frigging politics, but music is a different matter) Go easy guys and ladies, just got up after zonking out after dinner, and won't be getting back to sleep without a few whiskies. Gonna be a lousy night.

Gonna be a lousy night. Good man rubicon.... a man of ma own heart indeed ! I’m just enjoying a few myself in preparation for a wee holiday trip to Ireland and have 4 Huddersfield Town tops / polo shirts in the case to spread the word that folks of England’s finest club are in town ! I’ve made a wee diet iron ‘brewery’ mix for the bus from Belfast to Derry, will make more for The Giants Causeway area and more again for The Glens of Antrim coast road back to Belfast. It’s Black Bushmills and there’s nothing wrong with a wee sweet Black Bush in Ireland be it the whiskey - or ‘something else’ with the same name - just as juicy !!!! Aye Sunshine on Leith is some anthem, you’d have got on well with ma wee late gran as she was a Hi-Bee albeit a west coast one. I’m leaving the iPad at the family home (been visiting them) so I won’t be writing to DATM until I get back to ma own pad on Friday, so peace, perfect peace for all for a few days. !!!! However will read from the mobi and enjoy what crops up in the coming week. Great to stride around The Emerald Isle with The HTAFC attire on, usually it’s only all the ‘glory’ tops of England’s Premiership you see there (and Celtic & Rangers) But Huddersfield Town it’ll be in The Emerald Island proudly worn by The Terrier from The West Island !!!

I generally go and see the Hearts at least once a season (my second team) however due to the virus it seems ages since I last visited Edinburgh , some cities tend to be rundown and grimey, this cannot be said about Edinburgh , it really is a truly handsome city. A friend (Som) who I have sadly lost contact with used to put myself and a fellow Hearts supporter (L***s fan) up for the weekend. He used to live in Balerno but moved to Livingstone the last I heard. He originally came from Biggar, and I fondly remember a good night out in Biggar. Our first time up in Edinburgh and Som dropped us off at The Burke & Hare (which was interesting) though he and his missus were not into football and we all met up later for a sesh around Edinburgh. Tynecastle is a fabulous ground though, when I have been I have generally watched opposition such as Kilmarnock / Motherwell etc as I imagine getting tickets for games against the Glasgow sides my be difficult. When I stop in Edinburgh these days I mainly stay in Leith which has a really great selection of pubs, most of which are located quite centrally, I will be heading to Edinburgh in the near future now that the lockdowns seem to be a thing of the past.

Got to agree about Leith. Use to be a right shithole but since they have built the Scottish Government buildings the place has improved 100%. Always stay down there now, either the H.I.E at Ocean Terminal or an Airbnb in one of the converted warehouse off Commercial Street. For Something different try the Port of Leith bar.

The place to go in Leith is The Vaults, the home of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Fantastic, historic place, roaring fires, sumptuous, deep leather sofas, every malt whisky that practically ever existed and great food. The prices can be eye-watering for the rare classics, so better to go with someone picking up the tab!
Haggis, neeps and tatties in a creamy whisky sauce……yummy.

SPFL 12/9/2021 - Heart of Midlothian v Hibernian (k.o. 12 mid day)
Reading the above pages, several Town fans have an interest in both The Jam Tarts and The Hi-Bees. This is usually a rip roaring Derby clash and I expect today to be no different, possibly a 2-2 drew and more than likely a red card being issued.
Probably more skill on the field of play than it’s Glasgow Derby counterpart equivalent, though no less passion and commitment, the only difference is less sectarian hatred in the stands thankfully, but still a raucous atmosphere especially at Tynecastle Park.
I think in an earlier letter, I said that the guy who piped at ma late father’s funeral is a massive Hearts fan, well Andrew is there today in executive hospitality as a well deserved treat, so do enjoy the whole occasion Drew -(although my late gran would probably scold me for that in a football context - her being a Hi-Bee although she was very fond of Andy her near neighbour).
I think this match will be available on sky sports and for those who don’t have it the match should be available on hesgoal on an iPad.
Good luck to Town fans with an interest on both sides of Scotland’s capital city of Edinburgh !
