We should be, but you need players that are first team ready too. If you're just going to bring in players and shove em all in the B team that's not making an impact of the first team is it? You still need to progress the first team. Who says that we're not looking for first team ready players as well? Pearson and Lees were first team ready when they arrived last summer. So was Nicholls, we just didn't know it at the time. I would suggest that players for the B Team DO impact the first team. They just don't impact straight away. If Sorba Thomas wasn't already our player, we wouldn't be able to afford to buy him now. If Lewis O'Brien wasn't already our player, we wouldn't have the budget to buy him either. The B Team is absolutely vital for impacting the first team. The only way we are going to be able to afford to push on is by finding undiscovered gems with potential and developing them. Even if we had an owner who made Elon Musk look poverty stricken by comparison, we'd still be wise to look for our own talent to develop. There ain't a club in the world who don't. I suppose the question I'd ask is, who could we realistically afford to sign that you would be happy with? It's not even about spending money on transfer fees there are plenty of players who have been released on a free. I suspect no one will be spending money, so as I said, there are plenty of players on frees available. We need to be kicking on from here, to make sure last season wasn't a fluke. If we sign him and he turns out to be a great player then fair enough but in the immediate aftermath of a hood season we should be looking higher up the food chain.

Would we have to pay a transfer fee as he is out of contract?

Would we have to pay a transfer fee as he is out of contract? If they have offered him a new contract then as he's under 24 they are entitled to compensation for developing the player. If the clubs can't agree a fee its usually decided by a tribunal.

Mates a season ticketholder at Halifax, says he's a very good defender but looks uncomfortable at times on the ball, rates him to make the step up to the football league but would be gobsmacked if he came straight into our 11.

Seen him a fair few times this last season; he's been quite inconsistent, but his physique and pace has gotten him by in a very physical league. I haven't seen too much of him on the ball to suggest that he's very mobile, but then 'Fax don't play-out from the back (especially given their pitch) - though I wouldn't say he's any less comfortable than Pearson. He is really quite calm / cool, however.
Was badly beaten on the near post by Rowe for Chesterfield's first goal in the playoff's.
Decent gamble for the b-team, there will be lower league takers if it fails.

I almost posted about this lad the other week after watching them play Chesterfield in the play offs. He stood out, looked very comfortable and did a couple of things which made you wonder what he's doing in the conference. Definitely looked worth bringing in as a development project There's a difference standing out in a National League game and standing out in a Championship game. OK Thomas has worked out to a certain extent for us but I'm certainly not convinced by this one. To the extent that he's gone from non-league football to the world cup in 18 months. fucking hell.

Decent gamble for the b-team, there will be lower league takers if it fails. Interesting. I've seen Halifax about 10 times this season and I'd say they play out from the back an incredible amount. I'd say around 70% of goal kicks are played short by Johnson (keeper) to a defender inside his own box. In fact it's cost them at least 2/3 goals I can think of. A big part of Halifax's failing this season a lot of the time was from overplaying it not just in their own half, but also from being so stubborn and refusing to whack a cross in or take a shot. Victims of trying to score the perfect goal in the playoffs as with a lot of games this season. - Yes the pitch is awful but it's probably better than Johnsons kicking... I didn't see much of Debrah in the first 3/4 games due to him being on the bench for the first half of the season. But from the few times I have seen him it's surprising. Not comfortable on the ball and whilst physically he is a big lad this doesn't seem to corelate into being physically dominating. Quite a few 'Fax fans didn't expect him to be offered a new deal, or to maybe be a regular starter for them again next season. They've triggered a years extension on him today, but the whisperings on their end seem to be suggesting a figure around 300k and a loan back. Most I know from the Halifax end are quite perplexed any side from any higher division are taking an interest. Hope I'm wrong if he signs and he takes his chance!

Are you suggesting Wales are leaving out top quality internationals to include Thomas? What are you suggesting here in regard to Thomas's International career? No doubting the lad has done well for himself but let's not kid ourselves here, he is in the Welsh squad because he qualifies to play for them and showed a bit of form. Outside of England, the home nations selection pool is pretty thin on the ground, do you genuinely think that if Wales had a couple of PL wingers Thomas would be anywhere near the squad? He's had a good season but a lot of Town fans opinion of his abilities are dramatically inflated.

Most I know from the Halifax end are quite perplexed any side from any higher division are taking an interest. Hope I'm wrong if he signs and he takes his chance! Strange what you see, I only ever saw them often revert to the long ball because it wasn't working. But then I guess I saw them play teams higher in the division where they may have changed to suit. I think the sub-context in my opinion is that I didn't see a player worthy of the Championship (in fact, I don't think I saw a single player that looked likely to do that all season. Including Tshimanga and Rodriguez). And I saw both the good and bad in his physicality (he was bullied by Rowe, but then many are). But then I wouldn't have thought either Pearson or Russel would have made the careers they have when I saw them at Fax and Accrington respectfully. I still don't think its a major gamble for the B-Team, mind you, if the cost isn't anywhere near £300k in initial outlay.

I believe Sorba needs to improve his final ball whether it's a pass or a finish. But... His call ups to the Wales squad are fully deserved. He has improved significantly over the last 18 months. He has become stronger and quicker, you can see this by just looking at him, from a part time to a full time pro, he will have had to work harder than most. Especially now he is on the international stage. If Sorba can improve his final ball/finishing, we will have a multi million player.

I'm surrounded by Halifax fans here in Holywell Green and the consensus here is that he isn't good enough for the football league never mind a top 3 championship side. Can only imagine town have seen enough to work with him for the B team.
I sincerely hope we go for actual quality for the first 11, Thomas was a gamble that well and truly paid off as were our other lower league signings last year but as we saw with Wagner/Siewert, lightning doesn't often strike twice. Particularly if we lose Toffs and O Brien, we will desperately need to replace them with real quality.

After leaving non league it took Vardy three years to make his international debut, Sorba achieved that in 9 months. In Vardy's first championship season he made 26 appearances scoring 4 goals. In his second championship season he made 37 appearances scoring 16 goals. In his first premier League season he made 34 appearances scoring 4 goals. Vardy's rise took several years to come to fruition, he wasn't banging goals in at championship and premiership level overnight.

My pessimism there is tempered only by faith in the job Bromby and co have done so far, coupled with the improvement in other members of the squad in recent times with our coaches. Such a negative response to the signing of a youngster with potential is something I find baffling.

Just signed a new contract at Halifax. Is this to stay or to make us pay more? I expect it's to strengthen their negotiating position. He's under 24 so there would be a fee involved if he was out of contract, but now that fee can be their starting point to ask for more.

You misunderstand I'm not against signing players like this but this has to be complimented by bringing in proven first teasers at this level, who can drive us forward. So far the main speculation has been about Boyle from Cheltenham, Debrah at Halifax and some 6ft 9 striker from Solihull!!! I accept that there is plenty of time in terms of signing players but I just think the club puts too much emphasis on this route at times when we might be well served getting in some proven quality at this juncture to improve on a good season. If the transfer budget is low, do we spend the money on Debrah and this big lad, as both are under 24 or do we use the cash to bring in someone who is ready to hit the ground running for the 1st team.

Assists and goals and a constant menace to defenders most of the season

Speculation is just press talk, some of which is more accurate than other. That's not the club's responsibility and tbh I expect if they're genuinely after a player they'd prefer to keep it quiet until the deal has been formally signed. Either way, blaming the club for uninspiring rumours in the press that they have little control over seems inappropriate. As for whether we're overspending on "project players" - whilst I can't claim any insider knowledge of how the club's finances are organised, it seems reasonable to assume that there's a separate budget for first team and development squad. Our ability to sign that first-team-ready centre forward is not going to be compromised by the fact we just took the opportunity to bring in that really promising midfielder for the B Team. If your argument is that we're overspending on the B Team budget vs first team, I'm going to suggest that the last "project player" we brought in (Jon Russell) is doing ok, as is the one before him (Sorba Thomas). Regardless of where we finished last season, you have to take opportunities when they present themselves.

If you go into town to buy new shoes, because you really need some, but stop off to buy a newspaper because the newsagent is on the way - doesn't mean you're not going to buy new shoes. Doesn't mean you don't recognise that you need new shoes. Doesn't mean you're not prioritising new shoes.
Every transfer window, same shit.

We’re a month away from pre season training.
The best players will have more than one offer. There’s 24 teams in our division and plenty of them will be trying to sign the same players we are. Some of them might want to spend more on a certain player than we do.
Some clubs will be trying to get a bidding war going.
We often sign players that aren’t being rumoured.
Chill the fuck out.

For context if signed this guy would effectively be a replacement for Kherbouche or Okpolokpo - the two young pros who play centre back and were released last week
I think people need to remember he’d be a project signing. On that score he sounds like he has potential so worth the punt
