The West Riding Senior Cup Loved them games and Home Internationals. There was also a tournament called ‘The Texaco Cup’ - I’ve a programme of Airdrieonians v Huddersfield Town from 1971 or thereabouts !

For some reason I always liked it when outfield players took goal kicks. From the corner of the six yard box. The side it had gone out as well.

Black boots
Knowing where everyone played by the number (1-11) on their shirt
Minor celebrities taking penalties at half time
Music provided by WH Smith of The Shambles, Huddersfield
Your dad making you leave 5 minutes early and run along Leeds Road to the car…to beat the minor traffic caused by an attendance of 4,000.
An hour of snooker in the Rec club with a beef and onion sandwich before kick off
Inflatable bananas
Hiring a cushion if you ever went in the main stand
Standing in a puddle outside the East Terrace that was nipple deep.
The magnificent smell of fag smoke wafting across a crowded cowshed

On the odd occasion the keeper would wear red or blue instead of green. Made my day.
One linesman with a red flag, the other yellow. So you could identify them from the programme I suppose.
Half way flags

(To be said in an Alan Whicker voice.)

Goalies being applauded by fans behind the goals as they ran towards the penalty area before the start of games, whether they were heading towards the home, or away end.
When the above happened, and the goalie got near the goal line, or touched the crossbar, the respective opposition fans breaking into a chant of, "Oh it's a monkey!" Oh it's a monkey!"

Just turned the TV on and England are playing ... turned straight off. Nations league totally anodyne bollocks . Which reminded me of a tournament which meant something.. the Home Internationals.
Reading through this thread I'm struggling to identify any parts of modern football which are better than back in the day (aside from maybe the pitches )

Oh how times have changed... Hammered by The Repubic of Ireland tonight - they’ve been pish of late.. we are obviously even pisher !!!

Half way flags Anyone remember Shilton’s Admiral keepers kit in All Blue! Also, it’s why pictures of the 66 World Cup wax so different - Banks in a yellow jersey.

I played in goals for my five a side team and had huge admiration for Peter Shelton... I remember he had a decent crop of tight black curly hair, a green jersey at Forest and his England tops always had big thick elbow and shoulder padding.. A great servant to England and to think yous had Ray Clemence too... Still we always had George Wood and Roughie !

The mobile printing press outside the ground producing early edition newspapers. Match Report and photo of Town game, plus the scores from all 4 divisions. They even had district league results in the stop press at the back... they'd kicked off earlier.

Watching Match of the Day without the incredibly boring over analysis of matches in extended and needless detail.
Having engaging pundits not like that braying buffoon Micah Richards.

The Town email group (Dyce?), later a Yahoo group. Still going (though I wouldn’t add “strong”) To add to the Saturday night examiner points - scorers in Capital letters. You could often know if Town had won or lost from distance.
