Just seen that. Surely people still look forward to listening to the results in the car coming back from a game. Sad news.

Mixed feelings on this one. I’ve not listened to these for a while. Most folk know the results from their phones anyway.
The other side of that though, is what it would actually cost to retain such a tradition? It can’t be much.
I’m a supporter of the BBC, but it’s lost its head with regards to PL football. It’s trying to compete with media it shouldn’t be worried about competing with.
Maybe there’ll be a bit of an outcry and get it reinstated?
Probably more of an outcry about this than things that people should be getting upset about. We live in strange times…

We were always so crap at kicking off on time they would be half way down league 2 before I got the radio on anyway. End of an era though true enough.

Actually they should bring it back, and just play it on a loop for however long 606 with Savage and Sutton is normally on.

As someone posted on the grauniad website, this was the only place where a Scots team with an attendance of 280 get the same air time as a premier League team. Still gives them more time to discuss why manure are not winning games.

I will miss the music. Saying that, haven't listened to it in ages anyway.

I was trying to think when I’d last listened to it. Probably 1987 when I stopped going with dad after leaving school. He always had it on in the car when we pulled out onto Leeds rd from next to the peacock.
Put a smile on my face thinking about though

The in depth discussion of Man Utd would be lost in the chat about Towns game or other results.

Its one of those distinct childhood memories, listening to JAG read out the scores and predicting the away team score dependent upon his tone for the home team score. Onwards and upwards I guess.

But....why? It only takes a few minutes.
I listen to a lot of football radio, and although I often know some of the scores by then - I rely on the classifieds for interesting results in League One / Two and in Scotland. And the BBC have a duty to accommodate supporters of "smaller" clubs and in Scotland/Wales/NI. And what about the blind and partially sighted?
But even if it doesn't serve much practical purpose, it's a national institution.

It’ll be so they can give more airtime to Klopp moaning about fixture congestion/referees/dry pitches, etc. and some clueless celebrity DJ buffoon from Hertfordshire can tell you about where Tuschel’s tactics in Europe are lacking or why Harry Maguire is at fault for United conceding more goals than City. Another nail …

I will miss the music. Saying that, haven't listened to it in ages anyway. The way I read it the actual programme isn't going, just some of the content to make it shorter . Dropping results allows more post match guff then in time for preamble for late KO PL game on Saturdays. Hence I'd assume the theme would stay. I'd miss that more than the classifieds tbh.

East Fife 4 Forfar 5

Think Forfar 4 East Fife 5 is even harder - in fact both are as bad as each other and I think one or the other actually happened a few decades ago and it spooked the score reader ! Another one I remember from high school days was a Scottish Cup tie - “Stirling Albion 20 v Selkirk 0 - my goodness that must be some mistake it must be two nil - no I’m being told it definitely is Stirling Albion 20 v Selkirk 0” Thought about that memory from around 1984 or 1985 when Town Women gubbed some opponents by that very same score last season in a cup competition also it was I think !

Big mistake, like chopping Top of the Pops Slightly different from Radio footy results or The Charts on TV - but the day The Scottish Sun stopped the Ladies with boobs on Page 3 that was it for me - and I guess a helluva lot of other Lads as well !!!

Until fairly recently I listened to sports report on headphones walking up Leeds Road then back to Radio Leeds for the journey home. I've always enjoyed radio commentary. If Town are away I often go for a long walk and listen to the commentary. The dab debacle made even that difficult. Just another little pleasure gone. I'm no longer angry about modern football, I no longer care enough. Fuck em.

I have sky , BT, Amazon , the full shooting match but I still love to switch on and listen to the radio and like you one of my pleasures if I hadn’t gone to an away game was walking our dog listening to the town match on the radio

Think about what a radio commentator actually does.
They have to plant a picture in your head every few seconds.
Aside of that twat Green, most of them are so much better than TV commentators who don’t actually commentate on the game. They just reel off loads of pointless stats and make themselves look clever on the back of someone else’s research.
When you get the option (usually on the BBC), to watch on the TV but choose the radio commentary, it’s so much better.
Radio commentators don’t waffle during the game, unlike most of my posts on here…

It takes too much time away from the greedy league. They will just read the Premier League results as they are the only ones that apparently matter.

It's 0-0 so far" 🙄
