I don't like this contactless only thing in pubs/clubs. When I'm out on the lash I don't take my card with me, to stop myself overspending by getting more money from the cash machine. It's even harder to keep track if you're actually paying by card. Is it even technically legal to refuse cash? Of course it is.

It's even harder to keep track if you're actually paying by card. Not if you pay on your apple/googlepay. It's all there on your phone notifications, no escaping it ! Not set up for that. Only smartphone I've got is my work phone so I've not got anything personal on it. Except DATM of course

KN must love this board, he can have all his answers pre prepared by having a quick read of this before the meeting starts! In Episode 3 of "How To Buy a Football Club in 10 Days", Kevin Nagle attaches prosthetic fingers on to his feet in preparation for an in depth discussion with fans of the club he just bought.

Is it even technically legal to refuse cash? Of course it is. Yeah, googled it. Bit harsh on the elderly etc, but the way of the world, I guess. I always pay with my phone, myself, but it definitely rubs me the wrong way seeing signs where businesses refuse cash.

It came out just before the Social Media explosion, but I'd bet you haven't seen it if you can't remember it, if you don't mind me saying. In the Cowshed Loyal photo, promoting the event, I'd even go so far to say that KN has the ideal looks to have been a part in it (maybe a cop?) - can't explain that, you just have to see it to know why Just checked it on IMDB. I've not seen the movie but I tried watching the TV series but just couldn't get into it, no clue why. Possibly because I've not seen the movie? DO they follow on? Is it worth adding to my Amazon wishlist? Loved the series too, and yes, it's the same "universe" if you will.

Most places have signs saying the management reserves the right to blah blah blah Which is why that ultra-religious Christian couple shouldn't have been done for refusing to make the "gay" cake. Publicly ridiculed and boycotted? Absolutely, but not prosecuted IMO

Isn't the lead detective's name Gunderson or something, in Fargo? Yes, it is Gunderson - looks-wise I think KN could have been her boss in the film. I remember them saying "ja" for "yes", in a very nordic way. The name Nagle sounds German to me, phonetically at least I think I'm right in saying it's how a person from the south-west of Germany would say "small nail".

Nagel IS nail/pin/spike in German Spelt different but pronounced the same. My mum's best mate used to always say Hör auf, an deinen Nägeln zu kauen - stop biting your nails

My parents are in their 80s and both are able to slide a debit card across a contactless reader. At the time they become unable to do that I expect they will be shopping with a paid carer

The amount of corner shops that suddenly have card machine issues when you say you’re paying by card. As you’ve said, blatant money laundering.

I think we are far enough down the line that even most elderly people should be able to use a card. Always remember my folks using an access card back in the 70s.

Watching the film would probably get you more in the mood for the series - I'd guess. Is it worth adding to your Amazon wishlist? Absolutely!

At the time they become unable to do that I expect they will be shopping with a paid carer For some it's not about the ability. A few (less and less each year) STILL don't trust banks and other financial institutions. Especially some immigrants from "more corrupt" countries. EG my mate Chi's mum and dad NEVER used a bank, purely because of their experience of authority back in China. I've read there's still a few South Americans, Italians, etc who feel the same. That last sentence made me laugh out loud though

The most incredible thing is these places do not realise the amount of business they miss out on if they don't accept card.

I can say with absolute certainty that the shops I have been refused card payment on most recently have all been fast food establishments. Very easy to key in a few extra pizzas or kebabs than have actually been made. Of course they aren't all like that as you say but I don't think the cost of a card machine nowadays is as much as you would think.

Would love to have been there myself tonight, but for people in a similar position, and providing there's enough time to have questions put from DATM, what questions would we like put to him? Mine would be (just to make him feel at home): Has he got any (short) stories to tell about "Fargo"? Everybody's favourite film (he was born 5 minutes away, across the river in Moorhead). The movie was something that put the name of the town Fargo in big, bold letters all over the world - obviously it's in a different genre, but would he like the name Huddersfield to be just as well known all over the world, too? Slightly different reference, but my first thoughts when I saw he hails from Moorhead MN were of Fawn Knutsen and wandering daughter jobs :)

Who set the budget that is seemingly restricting what we can spend and who we can bring in? Was it Dean Hoyle or Nagle himself? I think the financial plans were submitted to the EFL before he had any control of the club, that’s the impression I got. By the sounds we’re restricted in August but not so much in January. I’d be interested to know what the plans with the training facilities are. To attract better players you need excellent facilities, like the ones which we were told we were getting, but ended up with a security hut 🤣 Nagle said last night that the budget restricted us for the entire season.

Certainly cheaper than lodging cheques, but it would still be charged for say £X per '000.

Oh yeah I know that mate, worked for a cash & carry for 18 years whose main customer base was takeaways and restaurants, I know personally the guy that owns the Mahmood's franchise. I'd tend to agree (although I don't know for sure) that card machines and the monthly subscription can't be THAT much to be restrictive, I just know that's the reason some of those C&C customers used.

That explains it, I didn't do the main accounts for them, just the Purchase/Sales Ledger, nothing at all do with the banking and taxation side of it. Edit: Just to say I do all the finance stuff for my current firm but we're an entirely BACS system so I don't see anything like that now either lol

Card companies charge a set fee plus a % on every transaction, Amex for example is 3.5%, it definitely adds up. Same as when you are paying online for something the company running the transaction do the same, e.g Stripe. For a cheap product it can hammer the margin, that's why a lot of places have that minimum spend to use a card policy.

Not just monthly fees, but the initial set-up cost too; some feel it's not worth it. Maybe historically, but none of that really applies any more, the market for portable contactless payments got so competitive that the big players no longer dominate and milk the retailers. For less than £50 you can buy a card-reader (or use your phone that has NFC for free), with no monthly contract and transaction fees around 1.5%. No brainer for one man bands & small enterprises to move this way, given the speed, lack of having to handle cash and change, extra security (would you rather your daughter is wandering round taking bundles of cash doing table service in a busy bar/restaurant, or taking payment on a machine that has no value to anyone?) for employees and employer, along with instant fulfilment straight into your company account rather than the faff of a bank drop. Of course, better to take BOTH. You want to be accessible to customers, whether thats someone who uses cash predominately, or someone who hasn't been to a cash machine in 2 years.

Why would you deny yourself part of a customer base? Seems like the complete opposite of business sense to me.
