One that got away, but just posting as an example of the recruitment team actively looking at players : “We had Wycombe [Wanderers] on the phone [after him]. Huddersfield [Town] were mad on him. We encouraged him to go to Brighton. Brighton now have an 18-year-old [his birthday was on August 26] better than some of what they have. Brody’s the way football’s going: he’s the quickest thing on two legs, 6ft 2in, an inverted winger, he has physical strength and the winning mentality. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/brighton-got-our-best-young-player-and-we-got-nothing-sn0x39sn8Will be interesting to see how he gets on.

We can't compete with big clubs like Brighton...They can afford to harvest loads of potential talent...

Cant read it all cos paywall but in the modern day when virtually any kid of any ability whatsoever is in the academy system at some point its weird he got to 16 being at Basingstoke Town. Even more so given how close Basingstoke is to Southampton and a few London clubs.

Whilst it's annoying he went to Brighton, a good sign that we were in for him after everything that went on last week.

There's another angle to this. It looks like the rules mean Basingstoke have been totally screwed over!

There's another angle to this. It looks like the rules mean Basingstoke have been totally screwed over! The rules are bizarre. Brighton aren't allowed to give Basingstoke anything at all, even if they clear it with the PL and the FA. Even £25K would help transform Basingstoke and keep money in the game, but it's not allowed. Yet millions are taken out of the game by players agents who invariably take the money from the clubs.

The EPPP (Elite Player Performance Plan) is an absolute disgrace at the best of times - screws over football league clubs, who have to hand over players they've developed to Greedy League clubs for a pittance - but cases like this really take the biscuit. I hate the Prem.

Seems a disgrace. A small nominal fee should be mandatory in these cases. With even a 5% sell on. Imagine if he gets sold as a 10m pound player? 500k to Basingstoke!

However, it sounds like Brighton have tried everything they can to do the decent thing, but the rules won't allow. Disgraceful, how on earth the FA can champion it's treatment of grass roots football with situations like this created ?

Isn’t this one of the reasons we changed the academy structure? Sort of, I think. The top category academies can, or at least used to be able to, just take players from lower grade academies below a certain age (16? and not under contract). There was a compensation package, but it was to cover the money spent on the players training and I don't think it had anything to do with the player's value or potential.
