Der Kaiser. Top player. World Cup winner as player and manager. He was already a ball playing centre half before they became mainstream.

Imagine Bobby Moore combined with Bobby Charlton with a bit of Gérson thrown in - that was Franz Beckenbauer.

His name is still shorthand for a really good ball playing defender. I can't think of another player who played that long ago who is still so often referred to as a benchmark for modern day footballers.

Fluid and elegant in possession. Box to box or a superb marker or sweeper. First player I remember seeing who had 'time' to play whatever the circumstances. RIP..

Played before my time as a football fan but well remember him as a manager of West Germany...
That West Germany he managed team won The World Cup in 1990 I think - I was a slim and very fit 20 year old at the time - 😊
Hell - WEST Germany - Westie you are getting old now ! ☹️
Used to see sporadic highlights of The West Germany 1974 World Cup winning team and remember his name along with that of Sepp Mair, (Goalie I think) Paul Brightoner (Big head of hair) and Ged Muller and Herbert Zimmerman (another with a huge mop of hair like Brightoner)...
Deepest condolences to his loved ones 💔 🇩🇪 ⚽️ and RIP Franz Beckenbar 🥃

It constantly amazes me when people rave on about the skill sets of modern players as though its something new. Worldwide we have always had players with great skills, but years ago they had to contend with pitches that looked like cow pastures, little or no protection from thugs in boots whose only job was to maim the opposition star players and with no modern physios or treatments for injuries.
From the great Hungarian team that thrashed England in 1953 to the great English team of 1966 to the great German, Dutch and Brazilian sides of the 1970s, those players have always been part of this great game and were at the very least as good as modern sides Franz Beckenbauer was a truly great player and my only regret is he was not playing for England. RIP Franz you were truly one of the greats.
