Well Bassingham, your query is yet to make the Knowledge column, but there's a Town-related one in it today. Potentially one in the eye for the Hogg haters: “Jonathan Hogg, Huddersfield Town captain, has been at the club through 484 league matches,” writes Richard Askham. “The club has an average of 1.17 points per game in the last 11 seasons, which reflects nine seasons of struggle and two top-five finishes. Hogg has made 345 appearances (including 15 as a sub) and has an average of 1.26 points per game. He has missed 139 games, when the team has managed 0.98 points per game. The difference of 0.28 points per game is clearly significant to a club like mine, but I wonder how much bigger differences there are or have been with other long-serving players?” It's in the "Can you help" section so will likely be answered in the next couple of weeks... www.theguardian.com/football/2024/apr/10/from-the-top-of-the-world-to-the-bottom-in-consecutive-football-games "He's one of our own..." 🎵🎶 A DATM regular. You've got a response, araucaria! And, ironically, the answer seems to be another ex-Town player! www.theguardian.com/football/2024/apr/24/the-knowledge-kingsley-coman-consecutive-league-titles

I'm going to wait until after this coming Saturday's failure to be awarded a penalty and then I'll ping The Guardian again.

I hadn't realised it was our Peter Ward. An unwelcome if timely reminder of our worst second division season ever.

Regulars to this board will be aware that I bang on about this a lot. Today I make no excuses for flagging it up yet again. Today's game (Leeds United) represented the last chance for Town to break this particular duck. And so yet another home game has passed with Town failing to be awarded a penalty kick. Tuesday, 5th March 2024, will be the third anniversary of the last time we were awarded a spot-kick at home. Remember also that this period includes a run to the Play-Offs in one season, something that in itself usually engenders the odd few home pens, but no. The last home penalty was awarded against Cardiff City on 5th March 2021, and was missed by Yaya Sanogo on debut. That was during the Covid Pandemic and so the ground was shut at the time. (I think that we were awarded three that season, and missed the lot (Bacuna, Campbell and Sanogo) You have to go back even further, to 25th February 2020 and Karlan Grant’s penalty against Bristol City, for the last time any paying customer saw Town take a penalty kick at home. And he scored it, so it's now also over four years since we last scored a home penalty. This record is simply insane and I am willing to bet that it is a world record. There surely cannot be another professional football club that has not been awarded even one spot-kick at home for over three years. Can there? There's a PhD here for someone. Simple multi-regression analysis required where you look at various instances that may have causal impact on a penalty being awarded. So Penalty against crosses into the box x dribbles in the box x shots at goal (for hand ball) x tackles of attacking players in the opposition box x corners x experience of the referee etc. You do analysis for every Championship club and this will then show any significance of these factors against penalties awarded. That's a lot of work... sorry don't have time!

And ready for another throwaway stat that almost is certainly unique?
Over the last four consecutive seasons Town's opening home game has been against the eventual Divisional Champions.
2020/21 - Norwich City 2021/22 - Fulham 2022/23 - Burnley 2023/24 - Leicester City
I suppose that we need to keep an eye on the fixture release date and lump on whoever we play at home first!
PS in true Town style we lost each of those games too. 😭

I feel like Fulham smashed us 5-1. Think I remember er.....Ryan Schofield messed up early on by trying to keep the ball in play (it'd actually gone out but wasn't given) and gifted them a goal somehow

Fulham beat us 5 1. Off to the tractor boys Saturday. Hopefully we can play with a team that wants to play for Town. TTID

Stearman was caught out, mainly because he was still recovering from the elbow that Cantwell only got booked for. Refereed by Geoff Eltringham, who we also got for the opening day games against Derby in the seasons either side of that.

Before us, has a team ever gone 3 seasons without getting a penalty at home? Surely they have to? 80 games now since we were awarded a home penalty. It's certainly a club record (previous record was 13th April 1996-3rd March 1998 - a total of 46 home fixtures in league and cup).
Looking at 99 Years, we're also on our worst-ever extended run for penalties, with 5 in 3 seasons (all away). Not including the season before, when we got 3 (all home - all missed). Unless someone's got something I don't know about or can't find, we've never had this few penalties over a 3-season period before.

I've submitted the query to The Guardian and it's been printed, so perhaps a statto, somewhere, will come back and enlighten us.
