Regulars to this board will be aware that I bang on about this a lot. Today I make no excuses for flagging it up yet again. Today's game (Leeds United) represented the last chance for Town to break this particular duck.
And so yet another home game has passed with Town failing to be awarded a penalty kick. Tuesday, 5th March 2024, will be the third anniversary of the last time we were awarded a spot-kick at home. Remember also that this period includes a run to the Play-Offs in one season, something that in itself usually engenders the odd few home pens, but no.
The last home penalty was awarded against Cardiff City on 5th March 2021, and was missed by Yaya Sanogo on debut. That was during the Covid Pandemic and so the ground was shut at the time. (I think that we were awarded three that season, and missed the lot (Bacuna, Campbell and Sanogo)
You have to go back even further, to 25th February 2020 and Karlan Grant’s penalty against Bristol City, for the last time any paying customer saw Town take a penalty kick at home. And he scored it, so it's now also over four years since we last scored a home penalty.
This record is simply insane and I am willing to bet that it is a world record. There surely cannot be another professional football club that has not been awarded even one spot-kick at home for over three years. Can there?

We're not a team that plays intricate tippy tappy football in the box that can lead to penalties. We tend to be crossing it in and picking up the scraps.
I'd say that has played a large part in it compared to what we saw today from Leeds where they're playing one touch in and around the box which is a nightmare to defend against

For three years? You honestly believe that? Really?!! We can all think of examples where we've had nailed-on pens not given. Robbed.

I'm saying that statically I'd expect us to be one of the lowest sides for entries in to the box with the ball under control and one of the highest for entries via crossing. That surely plays a large part in it. Not denying we've been hard done to on occasions. Koroma was barged in the back (against Hull I think) and it should have been given

There's often pushing, shoving and shirt-pulling when aerial balls come in, especially at corners. Refs tend not to give those, because they're spineless cards and don't apply the rules consistently.

Difficult to find a definitive answer on Google, but there are a couple of examples of periods without given penalties that you wouldn't automatically expect (after quick Google search): (Not exclusively at home, but) Liverpool not awarded a penalty at all between Feb 1997 and Mar 1998. (Again, not exclusively at home, but) Port Vale weren't given a penalty in 73 games, sometime between the years 2021 and 2022. Must be some other astounding examples, but I must admit ours does seem to take the biscuit: I mean 3 years without a penalty at home is really quite incredible by any stretch of the imagination!

How is that in terms of home games? I'm guessing at 72, based on league and cup games we've had in that time, but might be one or two fewer. How about the run of not getting penalties in front of fans, too? 1,468 days, and counting. 70 games exactly. As a stat, it's a stupid outlier. A team gets a penalty, on average, every 8-9 games (99 penalties in 380 games in the Premier League last season, 98 penalties in 552 Championship games). Since relegation in 2019, we've received a total of 16 penalties in 219 games. Considering 8 of those were in the first season, it's a barmy statistic. Preston, to pick a side at random, have been awarded 29 penalties in the same timeframe. Blackburn 22. QPR 20. I'm not going to compile a full penalty table, but I'd be willing to bet we're bottom 3 for penalties awarded among the sides who have been in this division for each season going back to then, which is a fair sample size - probably even bottom, looking at those numbers. We're due one, it's fair to say!

When you read all of this and add the play off refereeing and the blatant bias towards our opponents by the two most recent refs at home games it does make you wonder what the hell is going on. No penalty at home for 3 years? It’s ridiculous.

Can I also add, there's a curious lack of penalties conceded in the same time. 20 penalties conceded, 16 awarded. 219 games, plus cup ties which I can't be bothered to look up. That's another statistical anomaly.

The penalty thing is amazing but even more amazing is how many goals Helik has scored given that at every corner or free kick we have , he will have at least two opponents trying to take his shirt home early or one simply wrapping themselves around him and holding on for grim death. Every set piece is a penalty without exception.

Well Bassingham, your query is yet to make the Knowledge column, but there's a Town-related one in it today. Potentially one in the eye for the Hogg haters: “Jonathan Hogg, Huddersfield Town captain, has been at the club through 484 league matches,” writes Richard Askham. “The club has an average of 1.17 points per game in the last 11 seasons, which reflects nine seasons of struggle and two top-five finishes. Hogg has made 345 appearances (including 15 as a sub) and has an average of 1.26 points per game. He has missed 139 games, when the team has managed 0.98 points per game. The difference of 0.28 points per game is clearly significant to a club like mine, but I wonder how much bigger differences there are or have been with other long-serving players?” It's in the "Can you help" section so will likely be answered in the next couple of weeks... www.theguardian.com/football/2024/apr/10/from-the-top-of-the-world-to-the-bottom-in-consecutive-football-games
