Town have had a few promotions down the years but our last AUTOMATIC promotion was over 40 years ago in 1982-83. Yes, I'm old enough to remember it well. It got me wondering if our club has gone the longest without an automatic promotion. It turns out that apart from 5 clubs who have been in the top division since 82-83 (Liverpool, Everton, Spurs, Man U and Arsenal) and 4 clubs in League 2 who got there via National League play-offs (Harrogate, Morecambe, Newport and Salford) . EVERY other league club has had an automatic promotion. I'm in no rush to go down to League 1 and try and end this run from there, so maybe AB needs to take us up into the Prem automatically next year

Automatics are boring. The play offs are where it's at Penalty shootouts ๐ After a 0-0 involving a shit your pants moment every time the other team is in your half

Don't remember being bored in 82-83 v Newport (or 79-80), Play-offs on the other hand take 5 years off my life every time !

Salford, Morecambe, Newport and Arigut have all had automatic promotion at least once within the non-league system since 1983.

I stopped looking after the National League So we really are an exceptional club then I think we've been the sole member of that club for a while now. I seem to recall looking at that stat when I still lived in Huddersfield. I left in 2004.

And while I wouldnโt even wanna go down to League 1 it could happen (Hopefully not of course given Kevinโs plans for HTAFC) but Aye if it happened itโd be another notch in our hugely illustrious history should we ever prevail from League 1 (ex Division 3) as Champions ! ๐๐๐๐

Some of us go back as far as 1970s automatic and believe me it wasn't boring in the least. Still there were no play offs back then, so nothing to compare with at the time. Whilst I was 0 years old in 52-53 when Town were runners up and gained automatic promotion, I was around.

I've often thought about this and I would love to see us do it again. Sadly I think to do it in the Championship nowadays you need to have some serious financial clout, which we don't have.
I don't want us to be given the chance in League one, even if it meant being champions in all four divisions.

We have also played in play-off finals at four different grounds. I wonder if any team can top that?

That Cowling goal Elation that wasn't to be matched until the Schindler pen. Don't get me wrong there have been many other amazing highs but these two probably top the lot for me!

So impressed with what they've done, playing great football, scoring lots of goals, no superstars. That's what we need to aim for.

They did sign Kiefer Moore, just the sort of striker that would have excelled for us. Unfortunately out of our price range.

34 years for me and wondered what it would be like for some time! We got pretty damn close in 2004 mind.
30 years old that stadium and it still hasn't really had that HUGE HUGE celebration there. Sure its had the play off semis that were huge and the Barnsley survival game etc but clinching a title there would be something else.
That said defo don't want a league one championship next year though!
