Very sad to hear that former Town player, manager, coach and chief scout Steve Smith has passed away.
He played for the club between 1961 & 1977, & again in 1981. He also served as chief scout, coach, youth coach & manager 1979-1988 and Head of Academy Recruitment 2012-2013.
He is quite simply one of Town's best ever servants.

Great servant to our club. The header at Ayresome Park ( which stuck between net and stanchion) which earned us the point to assure promotion to the top flight in 1970 I will never forget. A real loss. RIP Steve Smith.

Knew Steve well back in the Town boys days, along with Trevor Cherry they would watch a lot of schools & local football.....A great servant for Town, but somehow the word 'servant' doesn't do justice to what he gave back to the club he truly loved. RIP.

Never would the chant 'He's one of our own' be more fitting than for SS. I hope there's a well deserved minutes applause at the next home game.

I (just) missed the Buxton era, he was manager when I first became a fan in 87.
A 2-0 win Vs top of the table Pompey.

A hard worker on the pitch, and a Town stalwart off it. RIP Steve. Remember him giving two fingers to the Kilner Bank when they were giving him a hard time, still makes me smile.

Nothing on the official site or other media outlets. Just thinking that as well, I just checked the official site to see if an announcement had been made, seems odd given Steve's association with the club.

A major player in that 1969/70 team - a loyal servant, always gave his best and his contribution was often overlooked. One of our Own.

A vastly under rated player, but a magnificent and unique part of the Huddersfield Town story. Sad to hear his passing at 77yo but will live long in the memory. RIP Steve.

RIP Steve Smith. Some great moments for Town, particularly the goal against the Massive in the Cup. Nearly 50,000 in the Leeds Road ground that day.

RIP Steve, I’ve seen him make more appearances for Town than any other player (Hogg will be getting close).
In my early years as a fan SS tended to get a lot of stick from the fans but from about 1968 onwards he became a key player in the team.

Never one of the more "glamorous" players like Worthington, just a very very good player and servant of the club. Thank you Steve, and RIP
