When Sam Allardyce went on the rampage after Fulhams Geoff Hopkins broke David Burkes leg, both SA and GH got sent off as well as Fulhams Kenneth Achampong, never mind fans fighting this was as entertaining as anything, remember us getting a last minute eaqualizer after being 2-0 down, at 2-0 down i remember saying to my mate, "Nowt dramatic ever happens here" .

Jeeze I'm getting old was there with Battyeford Boys Club that day for some presentation on the pitch I think, and sat in the seats for once rather than the terrace. Can remember the crack to this day. Allardyce punched him and trotted off to the tunnel...or at least that's how I choose to remember it

Disgraceful intentional leg breaker ages after the ball had been played. The noise was horrendous. The offender got a deserved few shots to the face but was eventually protected, someone even called the police regarding the tackle due to the fact he said he was going to do it to multiple people before the game. The lad who had his leg broke was just helping out as they were short of a right back.

Still bewilders me to this day the Roy Keane haaland tackle no citeh players even lay a finger on the horrible little Irish weasel. Bloke wouldn’t have had a face if I’d witnessed it on the pitch. Don’t care about what goes on but a tackle like that is unforgivable.

Seemed to take an age for big Sam to reach him, he just jogged upto him like a carthorse. Then as somebody said ran straight down the tunnel without waiting to see the red card.

It was a while ago though!

I just saw Keane’s “tackle” on Haaland being retribution for that.

I can’t remember one game this season from one week to the next but I remember the Burke/Hopkins/Allardyce incident like it was yesterday. Also the game at Leeds Rd when the linesman got twatted by one of ours and him being laid out on the touchline remains illuminated in the memory.

I just saw Keane’s “tackle” on Haaland being retribution for that. It was more that Haaland stood over Keane giving it the big un whilst Keane was on the floor in agony and helpless. Didn’t mind it from Keane at all, don’t make em like him anymore. Also, it’s a myth that his tackle fucked Haaland’s career, it was his other leg that finished his career, wasn’t Keane.

Wow. Remember it really well.
Was a city when Sutton broke his leg. Could hear that from 50 yards away too.

Didn't Burke later play in the same Crystal Palace team as Hopkins? Chris Marsden had to play alongside Mark Cooper when we signed the latter on loan. The linesman who was attacked was completely blameless. His mate on the other side had conspired with the ref to give a goal-kick instead of a corner and, of course, because of this Oldham went straight up to the Cowshed end and scored with 11 Town players seemingly unable to do anything about it. A guy who stood with us said that the linesman deserved it!

Now this is where I'm never sure whether my memory is playing tricks but I always have in my mind that we have a thing with players called Hopkins.
Didn't another town player have his leg broken by Robert Hopkins of Birmingham - maybe early 90s?
This could all be made up of course

I thought it was Bob Latchford that broke two Town player's legs? But I could also be making that up. He was definitely the culprit for Terry Poole's broken leg though.

Probably nothing like that in reality. Over the years your memory of these things gets hazy.

8 months later when we played Fulham (23 Nov) at home in the next season Hopkins was in the starting line up but one name missing from the Town starting eleven was Paul Jones, after the game Burkey was in Johnnys & still in his pot said 'Jonesy would be on a murder charge had he played today, but will be back in the team next week' (which he was)........Fulham finished bottom of the league even though they did the double over Town, David Burke returned to the 1st team a year later at home to Plymouth (22/11/86)

Blimey, talking of skewed memories, I was at that game and have no recollection at all of Sutty getting his leg bust. Can remember going 2-0 up in no time, conceding the 2 pens (to manager’s lad Kevin Bond) on half time and the second half winner, but bugger all about Sutton!

When I was a kid, if Town were away, my dad used to take me to Lindley Rec on a Saturday afternoon for a kick about and to watch Oakes WMC or Lindley Lib playing.
Think it must have been when the likes of Bobby Campbell and Lloyd Maitland were playing at that level.
One afternoon, a lad playing on the bottom pitch broke his leg. It sounded like a rifle going off 🤢.
Think the ref abandoned the match. It was horrendous.

Sam Allardyce is undoubtedly a Town legend. The whole thing of the incident, playing for us and throwing away a £2.5m bonus for the greater good last year.
