No chance of keeping hold of Helik. He's at the very least, a top championship defender. Every chance - if KN wants to keep him we don't have to sell. Can't see it. He will want to leave and there will be plenty of interest. Nagle or no Nagle we are still way way down the food chain when it comes to who we can and can't sell.

Always the short term option of a loan if he doesn't want to drop down. We took Huws from Wigan a few years back and similarly with Mooy. The shite up the road also tried the same with some of their big earners too.

If we can keep hold of Helik and get Balker fit then that back 3 has to be the best in the league, by a distance No chance of keeping hold of Helik. He's at the very least, a top championship defender. With two relegations on his CV. For all his good points, he does seem rather meek when the chips are down.

I think with Helik; for all that he's our best player we do have Lees, Pearson, Balker & Ayina as Centre Backs, with Turton, Ruffels & Spencer all capable of doing a job there.
He turns 29 early in the season. If we're going to get some coin for him then now is probably a good time to sell.
Note - that first sentence is a major reason why I'm not on board with signing Jordan Williams. RHS of defence is just about the only part of the side I think we're OK.

I sort of agree with you, however if MD wants to play 3-5-2 then we need to find some proper wing backs for both sides of the pitch, plus backups! These players are the key to the formation working as they are the only wide players on the pitch. They have to have pace, stamina and be able to both attack like a winger and defend like a full back. In the last few seasons there's only Toffolo who's been able to fulfil the role properly.

Can’t see it. A Barnsley supporting mate suggests Williams is poor, though not as poor as Jon Russell. He sure ain’t happy they paid us a bean for that lad. 😄 My pal ( on the Barnsley board sssshhh!) says exactly the same 😂

I realise he's one of the "bad eggs", but I wonder if Jaheim Headley could be turned around. A bad attitude isn't necessarily a permanent issue & if he's just easily led (as opposed to a big character that's an arsehole) he may well be turned around. From the perspective of looking solely at his on-the-pitch qualities I can see Jaheim being the sort of player who could thrive under Duff.

If Helik has any ambitions to play for Poland again, then he has to leave. I can't see him putting Huddersfield before his country. Let's just hope we can get some decent coin for him and boost the summer coffers!

The good version of Russell in last year's side would have been the missing piece that kept us up. The shite (aka normal?) version wouldn't even have got into our side. I don't say this about many players but I'd rather have Ben Wiles on the pitch than Russell.

The caveat to that is not sure Turton is a wing back and Spencer does very well on the left. This from Barnsley: On the retained list, the club’s sporting director, Mladen Sormaz, said: "All five of the senior players leaving at the end of their contracts have served the Club with distinction and can leave Oakwell knowing they made a difference on and off the field. A special mention for Jordan, as a player he has been great, but as a captain and a leader he has really excelled.” Given DM’s comments about leaders, and the fact he has managed Williams before, there may be some truth behind this rumour.

Yeah, on reflection if we're playing predominantly 3-5-2 then it's easier to see both Spencer and Burton have a role in the 3, rather than the 5. As wing backs they're a lot more "back" than "wing". The more I hear of how Duff likes to play I'm inclined to see a role for Ruffels as well. I thought he did ok at LCB before his injury and pushing him wider shouldn't be an issue for him.

Looking at William’s stats he played more than anyone else last season by about 500 minutes. He captained them to the playoffs, where they lost by one goal. If he was available on a free, which he is, and hadn’t played for us before, there would be a clamour to sign him on here.

We currently have: Helik, Lees, Pearson, Balker, Ayina, Turton, Spencer ... all capable of playing in his position. Ok, we'll probably lose a couple of those but we still seem quite well stocked there. I wonder if the budget might be better spent higher up the pitch or if there was a left sided version of him.

Agreed, and folk have to realise that we are in league one, not the Championship. JW has excelled at that level therefore is exactly what we want and having played under Duff he’d be as solid a signing as we could hope for.

Yes Williams played centre half for Barnsley this season, but he was up until then, playing rwb. He seem to do very well there for them over the last few years. I personally would take Cadden and O keefe no problems. Both good going foward, but also decent defensively. These two could also back up well if we were to be promoted.

I don't want to get carried away here, this is Town after all but.. from the interview with Duff and MC, it really didn't sound like we'd be signing Jordan Williams.
With all respect, it felt like we'd be aiming higher than someone just released by Barnsley. I think the ambitions will see Spencer stay and I can't see Turton going either so RB is sorted.
KN and MC have both given their excuses for the lack of summer recruitment last year and I'm hoping the reasons we're legitimate. With talk of budgets not being altered despite the drop, they're going to have to back that up, granted taking into consideration we won't have the same pull now.
Duff spoke of having a team ready to compete if the Championship and we're aiming for an immediate return. Can't see that Williams fits that criteria.

Must admit I'd be concerned I was a Barnsley fan. End of season collapse after starting so well, manager sacked the day before the season ends, his replacement the worst kept secret in football - then they can't get a work permit for him. Now they have what looks like a lot of their best players about to leave. It all looks a bit chaotic there. Maybe an opportunity for us to take advantage?

Depends on the reasons for release, I'd have thought. If they wanted to keep him but couldn't come to an agreement on his contract, they have no option but to release. I'd also add, I expect Diarra to go somewhere better than us next season. Personally I'd rather sign players higher up the pitch. I think we're OK in his position. Kane & Cadden have been released by them though & I'd take either (or both) of them.

Somebody is making the decisions about who stays but it doesn’t sound like the new manager, which makes you wonder what the criteria is, or if the players are voting with their feet.

It just struck me that some bold words were spoken, and if you talk like that you have to back it up. Kev is worth 7 billion and all we've heard is how he's more determined than ever, fingers crossed.

He seems very determined, give the money and am sure we can attract players .

I don't think Kevin buys any company to see it just amble along. He has been frustrated at the system in the States which, as far as I can see, prevents Sacramento getting into the MSL. Although we don't have a level playing field in England, with the right funding, shrewd investment in players, dogged determination and a large slice of luck you can reach the promised land. Though for someone from California he maybe ought to take heed of The Eagles warnings about calling some place paradise. I think, after a staggered start, he is starting to put things in place to turn the club around. All the invisible stuff in the background that was mentioned is good but it's about getting the right players and manager. I think we have the manager now but a lot will depend on who we can attract. The idea of 'Championship ready players' I think is related to the previous regimes strategy of getting lower league 'ones for the future' and bringing them on. The players we get may not really be Championship ready but they will be good players at our current level with the ability, hopefully, to step up, or players who have already had some time in the Championship. I really hope this is the best window we have had since Wagner.
