Tom Sutton – Head of UK Scouting
About: A local lad, Tom first started working for Rovers on work experience 10 years ago, before returning on a full-time basis this summer. In between, he held a part-time position at Stoke City for three years, which later led to a permanent scouting position, which he also held for three years. He then moved to Oxford United, working as a senior scout for three years, before he returned to Rovers in June, with 10 years of scouting experience under his belt.
From Blackburn site …

He's going to be dining out on Sammie Szmodics for the rest of his career Is that it? so he found a striker at Peterborough,I could of sent my 18 month old grandson to find a decent player to sign from them,a club that turns new talent out nearly every season.

Of course that is not it. Maybe he has found a load of gems and also a load with unfulfilled potential who don't make it. He is a scout - he will have his views on loads of players and he will have had successes and failures. Nobody will ever know how many players a scout recommends that a club don't end up signing as they are outbid/prioritise other positions/can't convince to sign, etc... He clearly has some varied experience at two clubs who generally produce some decent young players and invest heavily into their backroom staff. Surely it is a sign of intent that we are beefing up out scouting department and, as it would seem, able to persuade folk in jobs to come and join us. KN is building an infrastructure behind the scenes which will hopefully lead to a much better-oiled club which can start to shed this small club mentality.

I do wonder what scouts folk expect us to have... the man who built that barca side? It aint like it used to be anyway, where you might have a one old fella spotting england internationals playing in a park in the other end of the country.. their impact will likely be about as good as the system. A strong competent structure is what we need. It's a good sign if we are hiring

To be fair we don’t know if he’s been sacked, left or even been hired at Town do we? Was just a rumour I thought….

Nixon said left of his own choice and to a team in a lower division. So maybe we could celebrate that and look at the club improving the infrastructure rather than just constantly criticising the club 🤷

Seem to recall someone saying that Cartwright operated more like an agent than a head of a club’s recruitment system - not sure in what ways exactly, or whether that’s even true.
I’d take this as a good sign that we’re investing in a proper scouting function - seems like an area that’s really important but I feel as though we didn’t invest in it properly when we got to the PL.

We're a great example of how not to operate as a smaller club who gets promoted to the Prem. There are ways to get relegated from the Prem but still benefit greatly from the process. Luton for example will be a strong Championship side there or there abouts for a good few years. Regarding this appointment I'm glad we're attempting to build a stronger scouting/recruitment team, might take a while to build the machine but glad it's being done.

Tried to run before we could walk. Not on the amounts spent but the markets in which we spent it. We should have been buying the odd player from Germany known to Wagner/Buhler but mostly high end champ players looking to step up, thats the market we knew. Instead we decided we knew all about France along with other pockets of Europe. Unsurprisingly for a club with very little historic scouting network along with a rotating door policy on DOF's, we got completely mugged off. We have to improve our infrastructure to even be a competitive Championship club, never mind a Premier League one.

We don't really know what the club was trying to accomplish in the transfer market at that time, but I would guess that it was more a result of frustration based clubs wanting unrealistic sums from what what seen as a "Premiership" side. In the end it appears to have been a desperate hope of value for money. This is pretty much what we have seen since.

Which is what we would hope can happen with this 'reset' Less panic and knee jerk buying and having a structure and plan in place for the longer term

Terry the Terrier is sat in a dark room, shitting himself that Pottermus the Hippo is coming in to replace him. There’s something extraordinarily dark about imagining Terry on the off season.. ‘no walkies for you for three months sunshine’ a guard says as the familiar clink of the locking door behind Terry echoes in the quiet depths of the John Smith's stadium.
