QPR had a plastic pitch too. Think Oldham had one aswell. My first away game was at Oldham, Feb 87, on the plastic pitch. It was as solid as concrete and the ball bounced miles. We lost 2-0.

Were the plastic pitches an idea from the US or Europe? Trying to avoid games being postponed or something? They were a bit harsh and shiny though, a bit like Slapps and my heads… 😉 I know the balls used to bounce quite a bit but the pitches were not that hard.

Some real quality players in that era. Marsden, Charlton, Maskell etc all went on to play at a higher level. Mark Smith was a very underrated and skilful player. May, O'Regan and Hutchings were also good players. In many ways this season typified Eoin Hand's time as Town manager. Decent spells to almost challenge and then dreadful ends to the season. I miss going to all those old grounds back then.

The story of Mansfield Town were looking at Iffy Onuora & at the same time interested in some of the old turnstiles from Leeds Road........Apparently the turnstiles turned a lot quicker, but they took both.

Wish we had Maskell this season. (Or any of the last 10)

Wish we had Maskell this season. (Or any of the last 10) Maskell would be worth millions in this day and age. Apart from his finishing, he was a great free kick taker and could also play out wide if required.

Finally got around to watching that video, was my first full season as a Town fan. Slowed the video right down for the Wigan bit, to see if I could make out my dad, my brother and I as we were right behind the goal that game... sadly the footage was a bit too grainy to pick us out!

They were well in the race for the play offs until early March and then lost their form quickly.

Having watched this again, how good was Mark Smith? Was right behind the goal at Walsall, great finish in off post from Smith. Pandemonium when Iffy headed the winner in the last minute.

They were well in the race for the play offs until early March and then lost their form quickly. March onwards until ghe end of the season only produced 4 wins along with the 6 nowt caning at Bury.
