Hi all, Would you complete our 90 second survey? The aim is to find out where supporters of your club live. When we get some responses, I will publish the stats here - it will show the towns/cities and countries where people live. Here's the link to the survey: bit.ly/football-fan-survey If the link doesn't work, please copy and paste the link into a browser tab. It's about putting your club on the map, showing its support around the country and beyond. I'm an exile so I've got a personal interest in this. Feel free to send the link to any football supporter you know. I was given the OK to create this thread by Wingman I provided him with my phone number, email address and website details in case there are any concerns about spam, bots etc. Thanks!

I'm an exile and I know others who live away from the club they support. I know foreign nationals whose main team is an non-Prem English club, for example an Italian mate of mine supports Hibernian. So I've got an interest in this. Eventually I'm going to widen the investigation further than the supporters stats, but I thought I'd do some surveys first. You guys will get to see a sample of data that shows where your supporters are based - I will publish your stats in this thread when enough responses have been collected. As for your question - yeah, probably a million fans outside of Manchester!

From past surveys Man Utd & Celtic have less than 25% from the area they play with Liverpool (under 30%) next, Town have a few fans who are not born & bred & quite a number who were but live elsewhere now......L33ds probably have more Welsh speaking fans than Swans/Bluebirds put together, also with the lowest IQ.

Done. I think my username on here covers it! It will be interesting to see the results. I’m pretty sure there’s a Town fan living about three miles from here in the Banstead area (where Chris Powell also lives).

Point is, there's a lot of this around!

Wouldn’t a more interesting question would have been where were you born? I was born in Huddersfield and lived in Huddersfield for many years but I now live in the Canary Islands. I am a Town fan. I know people who are from London and South Africa and are Leeds fans!!

I will be doing more research (for want of a better word) into Exiles and will definitely be looking at where people were born.

Done.
As above, should have where did you grow up and where do you live now as separate questions.
In some parts of the country, people are more likely to relocate to get the right job for them. Also some clubs are more likely to attract fans from outside its catchment but the survey has no way of separating the two.

As an example, I’m from Huddersfield, support town, moved away for uni and then travelling. Lived between Huddersfield and Leeds until about 30 then relocated to Manchester and then Stockport for a job - will stay here for good now.

And then you've got cases like me and other pad brats; born Wakefield, grew up in Iserlohn, Hameln, Dortmund, Bulford (Wiltshire), Hong Kong, Soltau and Fallingbostel but remained a Town fan because my Hecky-based maternal family drilled it into me from a young age. If my dad had been interested in football (he was more into sports like tug-of-war and competed for the Army) in the 70s/80s I MAY have ended up L***s. Thank fk for my mam's brothers I bet there's loads of variations on that kind of theme. But if cheshireeast went down that route his questionnaire could end up huge

I pruned my orginal list of questions right down to the one thing I wanted to focus on - where supporters are located now. The other issue is the time it takes to complete - it's around 90 seconds now. I reckon much longer than that and people might give up.

I have friends from there some are Town fans some Leeds. Why Town? Wakey is (as you allude to) a massive L***s area. Luckily for me when we came back to UK we generally stayed with my maternal grandparents (Hecky then Batley) because they had a bigger property and could accommodate us fairly easily, whereas my paternal grandparents had a smaller property plus had my aunt living with them at times. Usually we'd just have flying visits as my dad and his sister didn't always get along. This meant my mam's brothers had ample opportunity to take me to Leeds Road and I didn't even know my dad's side of the family were L***s until I offered to take my youngest paternal cousin to a match and he turned up wearing a L***s scărf. Suffice to say he left THAT at home

Different pubs for blue and red and there seemed (yes I know it's fiction) a fairly equal split of red and blue walking (ie local) to the match.

Not done!
I think it's odd there aren't questions asking where you grew up, or at least where you were born, given people move around all the time. The questionnaire is flawed in my opinion.

I don’t think place of birth has any real relevance in this survey, but agree that the place you grew up in might have added to it.
In my case I happened to be born in Dewsbury simply because Moorlands Maternity Home was a common place for births in the 1950’s. I’ve never lived in Dewsbury and have no affiliation with it whatsoever. I grew up in Birstall, midway between Leeds and Huddersfield and that will always be home to me even though I’ve not lived there since going to university in 1973; my mum and sister still live there.
I support Town because my dad took me to them first (v Middlesbrough 30/3/65). My second game was Leeds but that was already too late.
