Moan time. Apologies.
Watched MOTD for the first time in years last night. Awful. Lineker is past it, Joe Hart was bloody awful just offering generic comments and no real insight for a man who has had such a decent career. Highlights were short and with no real depth. Analysis was terrible. Maybe we’ve been spoilt by the coverage Sky and TNT offer. At least Lawrenson and Crooks aren’t about anymore.
As for Sky Sports. How many of their presenters and commentators pronounce ‘news’ as ‘nuuuuws’ in the yank style? Ugh. Then don’t get me started on the awful drones of Lee Hendrie, Clinton ‘from the hood’ Morrison, and the man who would thinks he’s better than he is; Mr Jamie Redknapp. Stick to advertising ‘sneakers’ to the American’s.
Top it off with the man who talks for five minutes over a corner and adds nothing, Andy Hinchcliffe.
Any additions? Any positives? 😄

Self righteous twat who drones on and on and on. Morrison is just as bad on the radio, he grinds my fucking gears as well. And taking of radio, that faux banter shite that Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage do on Five Live is well past it’s sell-by date.

Don’t understand the point of studio pundits. Their opinion is no more valid than mine, and very little insight is given, so why do they exist?
Similarly Five Live make a big deal about their Monday night club, wherein opinions are given about the weekend games. Why should Listen to their opinions? Really boils my piss if a Tuesday morning sports news bulletin includes a clip of an opinion expressed the previous night. This is not news.

It's all shite. Whether it's the case or not, most TV companies assume people only want recognisable ex-pros ("they know the game") as pundits and co-comms. Michael Owen, for crying out loud - wonderful player, but the man has the charisma of a wet paper bag, and his experience in the game provides absolutely nowt.
Five Love's match coverage is generally pretty good, Monday Night club occasionally excellent - but I really only bother with podcasts. Journalists rather than ex-players. Best two - Guardian Football Weekly and Not the Top 20.

The stream I watched of yesterday's game had radio commentary from Stevenage rather than Oggy and Glennon.
What a pair of cards. Started by complaining that they didn't like all the shenanigans at the start...at this point it was just school kids waving flags.
Continued to basically be arseholes for the next ten minutes till I turned off and watched in silence.
And, for the record, Sam Matterface needs his mouth welding shut.

How Clinton Morrison keeps his job is beyond me. Journeyman pro,won nowt, can’t speak properly. It’s laughable.

I think the ITV Football League Highlights programme is excellent. No unnecessary waffle, just quick coverage of all the goals in all three leagues.

Those who slag Radio Leeds Town commentaries should try listening some of these other local stuff. Oggy and Glennon are streets above most of them, even though they are s ared of being too critical of the club.

I think the ITV Football League Highlights programme is excellent. No unnecessary waffle, just quick coverage of all the goals in all three leagues. Other than because it's on ITVX you can't fast forward and see what's going on. Luckily on the timeline the leagues appear to be delimited so you can at least find league one, after that it's pure guess work

I mentioned on another thread a week ago about Hinchcliffe and Goodman and the need for Sky to refresh their summarisers and pundits. It’s the same tired old cliches every game, the same opinions they have that you know what they are going to say. The big lass that sometimes presents Efl on sky is appalling too, no idea how she got that job. Clinton Morrison is another I can’t listen to. He can’t speak properly, describe anything properly and it’s honestly embarrassing to listen to in my opinion.
Gary Linekar I have never understood the hype and why he is paid so much. He has the personality of a wet lettuce and I lose all interest within a minute. For me you need people like Jeff Stelling presenting. I know he wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I used to like Tim lovejoy on soccer am.
There must be some insightful recent ex players that could give a refresh that would do a far better job than Hinchcliffe and Goodman. Players who have just retired who know the league they are describing would surely be a better option.

Bring back John Helm…
Remember back in the day when it was all about the game and not about what some ex pros opinion is in the studio. So much better than this over analytical shite we get nowadays.
I can sort of understand it with subscription channels, because they have a lot of air time to cover, but MOTD is once a week and they continue to put the presenters ahead of what 99% of folk want to see, football…
As I get older I can start to understand why people older than me got bored with televised football.
Back to the Big Match revisited, the letters at the end of the programme. Imagine if they did a modern day version of that now, posting Tweets… 😂😂😂

Amazon have an option to watch games without commentary and you just hear the crowd. It's brilliant. It would be great to have that option for other broadcasters.
You'll never get that from Sky because they are constantly using the commentators to advertise other events from Sky.
I am sick of hearing the guff from commentators who just talk for the sake of it and usually just state the obvious.

I've always thought they'd be better off saving themselves the bother of hiring a commentator for the Red Button / Sky Sports+ streamed EFL games. They will generally be attracting pretty niche audiences who are more knowledgeable than the guy employed to say stuff for the sake of having some background noise. I have an active Sky Sports subscription but chose to watch yesterday afternoon's game on a US Peacock stream as I find their Champion / Le Saux / Dixon commentary team much easier to listen to than Drury.

The inclusion of the likes of Goodman and Hinchcliffe et al,totally unwanted by me,the current format of EFL games with just the commentator is much better, and why do SKY employ that pillock of an ex-ref,talk about jobs for the boys,no wonder our subscriptions are so high paying for twats like that.

I think he was discussing the Luis Suarez/Evra incident and he was asked to comment on it, he condemned the racism but used the word 'coloured'. Remember watching it at the time and thinking, hmmm that's very clumsy. He didn't last long as a regular panel member after it. Nowadays you'll hear politicians and campaigners using the term 'persons of colour' to describe a black man or woman which apparently is acceptable and totally different to the word 'coloured'.

Yup, you used to be able to switch between commentary, no commentary at all, and also some FAN commentary (which was utter garbage - possibly slightly interesting if you were actually a fan of one of the two teams). Then the EFL "red button games" by default had no commentary at all and just a single camera with no replays up until relatively recently. Theoretically it should be the closest to actually watching a game, but in reality it was totally unwatchable. On TV, you *need* multiple angles, replays, and commentary (but you don't *need* punditry).

Quest EFL programme was the best by an absolute country mile. Colin Murray knew his stuff and was genuinely enthusiastic for the EFL and just seemed to get what it is to be a football fan. The non ex-pro pundits added some really good, insightful, non-cliched comments as well.
