From Friday's DT Sport.
Barrow play Chelsea away in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Barrow will pay their players a £250 win bonus but, will pay the players £1000 if they lose. This is not against EFL rules, but the EFL have asked for an explanation from the club.
This just goes to show how even some of the smaller teams view this competition... it is the league that really matters.

This makes no sense. Do the Barrow hierarchy actual think their players are capable of winning at Chelsea?

This makes no sense. Do the Barrow hierarchy actual think their players are capable of winning at Chelsea? No, that's why they are paying them a grand to lose, nice work if you can get it I suppose.

Why pay them a grand for an outcome which is 99.9% likely anyway It would make sense the other way around if Chelsea wanted out of the competition and their owner offered his players money to lose the game

I suspect it's an admin error or a poor description/interpretation.
If it's not a basic gaffe, perhaps the £250 is the standard win bonus and the £1,000 is an additional one for where they progress to in the cup.
If so, if they win they'll get the £250 AND subsequently presumably also the £1,000 or an even larger amount for getting at least a round further, i.e., more than £1,000.

My guess without knowing any details is that they have a £250 win bonus per game in their contracts as standard, but then have a bonus for getting to a certain part of the cup.
So lose and you get the £1000 for being knocked out in the 3rd round. Win and you get your £250 win bonus and the £1000 gets delayed (or increased) until you get knocked at at whatever round it is.

Headless beat me to it.
I would also say that there is no chance Barrow would throw a game on purpose against one of the biggest sides in the country. For a lot of them, this will be the chance of a lifetime.

I didn’t see Neo Ecclestone in the squad yesterday? If it’s an injury it’s come at a bad time for him. There was an article about him in last weeks Football League newspaper, he spent 10 years in the Chelsea academy (he’s also close mates with Levi Colwill) and so was relishing this clash.

So how many Barrow fans will make the 580 mile round trip! i suppose its watching your team play one of England top clubs and a great stadium rather than having a cup run and getting some money in.

Gotts and Eccleston had muscle tightness; Clemence did not want/need to risk them. Don't let the old man in. From the Barrow forum, sounds like he'll make the Chelsea match. Two assists for Ben Jackson yesterday, so pleased he's getting regular football and doing well.

The last time i was up there we spent time at The Laurel and Hardy museum and then the campsite got flooded during the night after a the mother of all thunderstorms. It's quite nice countryside to say the least but the missus and her family couldn't wait to get back to Oldham!! i insisted we took in Morecambe on the way home and a visit to Mr Blobby Land, dear me even now 30 years later i get some earache over that.

Jackson is probably a low end League 1 quality player but I think he's much better off thriving at a team like Barrow for now, draws a line under his bit part role with us where he was also quite out of his depth. Very glad he's doing well. Hope to see a bit of Neo in the second half of the season for us.

I wonder what Chelsea are charging for tickets for the Barrow fans. Last night Barnsley fans were not happy been charged £40 for a 3rd round game in the League cup, bit pricey is that.
