One look at Raymond's pitch in 1989 and I was hooked.

93 years old by my reckoning. He seemed quite a elderly chap on those videos from back in the 90s so Im quite surprised he was still with us. He once get very narky with me for standing on the pitch when I was helping a photographer mate do a photo shoot at the ground. Like I was standing on his baby! Cant imagine what hed have made of the modern trend of players sliding on their knees towards the corner flag when they score and leaving 2 deep trenches in the pitch! Doubt hed have reached 93 if theyd been doing that back then!! RIP Raymond.

Lee, latterly of this parish, and Reece Dinsdale (also latterly of this parish!) had a Twitter exchange about Raymond a few weeks ago, which took an unexpected turn when Lee revealed our erstwhile groundsman once ran off with his auntie 😳 RIP Raymond

I was going to put something about him treating the Leeds Rd pitch like it was his baby, but it sounded a bit twee when I'd typed it. But that was how he treated it. Plus, he did always seem to be around 75 years old!

He continued to do this even after Town had played their last ever game at Leeds Road.
Just before the ground was demolished, I played in one of those games where you paid £50 (?) a team to have a game on the famous old pitch.
When our team emerged from the player's tunnel, there was Ray 'patrolling' his pitch. He shouted at me, telling me not to go into the goal area.
After I told him that I was the goalkeeper he reluctantly said I could go in as long as I didn't tread on any of the white lines!

Very sad to hear about this passing of Raymond Chappel (R.I.P.)...
I’ve Videos of The Final Whistle I & II and he’s in that talking about all things Huddersfield Town in his role of Groundsman at dearest old Leeds Road !
He had such pride in his field of play there as well !
One of the oldest links with The Grand Old Lady has like her (Leeds Road) gone to rest...
Deepest condolences to his loved ones and close friends from Bonnie Scotland at this very sad time -
R.I.P. Raymond and rest easy...

He used to look after Lascelles Hall cricket ground for a bit too. Was a lovely man but quite reserved if I remember correctly.
RIP Ray…..
