It is always easy to make the keeper the scapegoat when he has let in four but has anyone else seen todays goals on Calender this after noon.
First goal was a crap clearance by mirfin after confusion with clarke (when will ritchie learn).
Second goal, mirfin let beckford in at near post, smithies no chance.
Third goal, smithies good block, beckford into tap in to empty net.
Fourth goal, smithies good block again, flo tap in.
I think the problem today was not the keeper but that the defence in front of him and midfield further up the field, were slow to react to the second ball all day long.

Even if it was Smithies fault, which i don't think it was, he's only 17 for goodness sake! The defence weren't great either tbh.

I am in no way laying any blame at smithies, quite the opposite in fact. I dont think he got enough support from the other players in front of him.

The scoreline today in no way reflects the performance of the keeper, I thought he had a good game with his kicking being a lot better than glennons of late, he was badly let down by the keystone cops in front of him, the defence need to take a long hard look at themselves, personally I'd like to see him have a start next week to give him some confidence and experience
As for the prick who said on his way out that Smithies should be sacked, go home and watch the goals again you prick

The first goal was a crappy clearence by wallwork wasn't it? Either way, it goes down as a keeper error by Smithies. He should have saved it.It went straight over both his hands. Glennon would have got slaughtered for the same mistake. I don't blame Smithies though. hes 17. We paid the price for not having the squad strength of a 2nd choice keeper. Something that being going to catch us up all season.

Despite todays scoreline I reckon if young Smithies got a few games under his belt we would have a pretty good 'keeper. He can certainly kick a ball for sure.

i have watched him play for the reserves and his distribution of the ball is excellent. must be one of the few players to have played for their academy, reserves and first team all in the same season

That is something that stood out. Several times he punted it accurately to one of our forwards. His reflex saves for the 3rd and 4th goals were excellent too. Kept himself together after his mistake for the 1st.certainly looks a great prospect

Yeah, I think your young keeper did well, despite being subjected to some fearful abuse from the kop second half. He showed good composure and caught and kicked well, definately a prospect for the future.

Yeah, I think your young keeper did well, despite being subjected to some fearful abuse from the kop second half. Huh?! Must have passed me by - the atmosphere from the Leeds crowd was pretty disappointing today after all I'd heard about the new Elland Road roar. Yes, I know the Galpharm is a bit of a library at the mo, but I'm talking about the perspective of 30791 home contingent - almost 4 x our average home gate - by comparison the Galpharm rocks once you get above 15 or 16,000 fans in (pity we don't get it that often ) PS - Appreciate the other compliment for Smithies though, very honest appraisal when its easy to rub it in after a 4-0 victory - the Leeds fans seemed to go easy on us I thought generally speaking, I dunno - perhaps we earned a bit of respect in the 1st half?

Towns defence I felt was at fault today, we gave them too much respect off the ball, asif we expected to lose 4-0 Dont rate Clarke at all but hey what can I do? Applause everytime Smithies got the ball was well duly for the lad, he had a good game even if the scoreline showed differently.

I thought he did a lot better than I thought he would - better than some of the more experienced muppets.

What happened with the 2nd - looked like it went straight through him?

It was a good low cross and smithies moved out to collect it. Unfortunately Beckford reached it before it got to smithies and glanced it in at the near post. Didn't go through him. I have to say I thought it was poor judgement by the keeper, though the defending around him was poor to say the least.

(although, is that something you might not want to admit to these days??)

He is an excellent prospect but let's let him develope a bit more before we throw him back into the firing line again.... 6 goals in less than 120 mins of play isn't going to do his confidence much good....

He has a lot of potential, but keepers tend to take longer to develop than outfield players. The bloody FA should have rescinded Glennon's red card in light of the player/ref admitting that it was a slip and not a foul.

He has the makings of a great goalie and with a bit more time im sure he will break into the first team. His confidence may have taken a bit of a battering but he can hold his head high, not easy being thrown in at short notice to a big derby match in front of a 30,000+ crowd and, despite the possible error(s), he had a good, solid game. Just wish the rest of the team (barr Williams) could say the same

The defence and goalkeeping situation, will stay the same unless some tight arsed git spends some money!
