The older ones will confirm but I think he was infamous for a goal scored by Blackpool against us where a Blackpool player hoofed the ball into the air from inside his own half which appeared to be going over the stand behind the goal - Wheeler took off his cap and started to it goodbye... However, a strong gust of wind took the ball down and into the net leaving him red faced yet amused. Apparently a good keeper and gent. RIP.

Was part of the unchanged back line of promotion to top flight team in 50/s Wheeler-Staniforth-Quested-McEvoy and ? before my time but RIP Great goalie, good bloke. In 1952/53 the defence was: Wheeler, Staniforth, Laurie Kelly McGarry, McEvoy, Quested. We only lost 3 home games that year and yes it was a "gust of wind" goal that lost the 4th round tie at Bloomfield Road 0-1. It was kicked 60 yards or so!
