www.htafc.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10312~1576594,00.html Highly-rated England under-19 goalkeeper Alex Smithies has committed his long-term future to Huddersfield Town. Smithies signed a new four year contract this morning that will see him stay with the Club until June 2013. Alex's contract was due to expire this summer and his long-term future had been subject to much media speculation, with several high-profile Premiership clubs closely following the youngster's progress. That has now been laid to rest with this new deal.

Great news and glad its sorted at last. Think the lad has made the right decision for his future. By the end of his 4 year deal, should he still be here, he'll be an established championship keeper ( at least ) with 200 games under his belt, yet still only 23- a baby in goalkeeping terms. Still at home with his family and friends, earning an exceptional wage for a lad his age, rather than being away from them all, in the bright lights of London, with daft money burning a hole in his pocket whilst he disapears from view in their academy side with the odd reserve game if hes lucky.

He may have signed a 4 year contract but I doubt he'll be here in a couple of years. Not that i'm not happy he's signed just think when a bigger team come in with more money he'll leave.

Maybe even 1 year. If he wants to be playing week in week out for a developing club then he should stay here for 2-3 years. Still only 21 by that time.
I think a lot of it depends on where we are by that point.

I wonder how many clauses himself or his agent have stipulated before he'd sign. Good news but i just wonder....................

Id have thought thered be a few of those thrown in, Like ,if we don't go up this or next season, he can leave if somebody bids £1m or something. Fair enough really. Hes bought into the ambition the club is showing and wants to be part of the journey Hoyle is taking us on. If the club fails to deliver for whatever reason, its only fair he gets to fulfill his own ambitions elsewhere.

Great news, i'm suprised he has signed though i would have taken the chance of time with a premiership club like a shot even if it did mean watching from the dugout.
'Good on him'

Quality, Gonna cheer every save the lad makes tonight. Great committment. By the time his contract is up for renewal he will have made an England U'21 and will be in contention for first team of nationals. Top keeper & Young talent.

Clarke scores a last minute own goal off his face the day after signing his contract. Whats the betting Smithies drops an absolute howler tonight? ;D
