why on earth are we persisting with clarke and mirfin...
both average defenders who make lots of mistakes..
8 goals conceded in 2 games.
we've been crying out for a big hard centre back ages...

I'm very surprised that Berty has not informed Phil that the prural of centre half is centre halves.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but we have conceded far too many goals for far too long now. Even during our successful period under Jacko we were still conceding alot of goals. When was the last time we didn't average over a goal a game conceded?
Defending is a team responsibility, not just the centre halves, but our central defence has been weak for some time now. Clarke and Mirf are probably the best we have available, but it is obvious that we need an experienced, decent quality centre half. Perhaps Williams could fill in, but I suspect Richie will play him on the left.
Whatever happens, we have to find a way of conceding so many goals. We always have to try twice as hard as the opposition to score!

They're our Achilles heel. Mirfin is overrated to me by many supporters. He's a 100%er and has a good attitude and is quite quick after the first few yards but he's deplorable in the air, lacks composure and switches off a lot. He's got quite a fair bit of natural ability - maybe he just needs to mature further as centre backs tend to come into their own at a later stage. Clarkey isn't a bad defender as some would have you believe. He reads the game well and is the only one who talks (apart from Frank) along the back line. His main weakness is a lack of natural pace and he's not commanding enough aerially, not to mention a low success rate with his 'Ronald Koeman style passing'... I think either of them would shine alongside an experienced commanding centre back of the ilk of Lucketti and it's a shame we probably can't afford to bring in a more experienced centre back.
and before anyone says Frank is experienced and can play centre back - yes that's true but he's not the type of centre back who'll dominate the back line like a Lucketti or even how Efe used to do on one of his good days.
Maybe in the summer Frank will depart to be replaced by a centre back and Mirf can play full back... I've always liked his powerful running and strength out wide.

Clarke has been playing far far better than Mirfin. Think Mirf avoids the stick due to a certain game at York. And Mirfin has never made 442's top 50 players has he

aye but didnt he win player of the year before?
so the two of them must be a good partnership! ;D
championship blackpool wanted brandon, skarz was voted young player of league one, holdsworth made it into some league one team, cadders scored against liverpool in 1997, booth once cost someone alot of money, beckett once scored more than 20 goals in a season, glennon was given a good reception by carlisle fans, sinclair has played in an fa cup final, williams scored in a playoff final, wallwork played for man utd, collins for ireland under 21s, smithies is englands u-18 number one, akins is currently getting into northwich victoria's team, schofield once beat his man and created a goal etc etc
so on this basis - league one champions elect!

Yeah Player of the Year means nothing no one good ever wins that. Players only get representative honours as a favour because international managers aren't judged on results and Four Four Two... what a rag, what do their journos know, nothing compared to Shoot! magazine
Good players don't become bad ones overnight.
It may be they need a change of scenery, sadly a lot of poorer prospects have left Town and then been sold on for a fee (Sam Collins, Lawson, Mattis ... infact Bury probably make about as much money out of our apprentices as we do!)
Paul Scott and McCombe are the latest "rejects" doing well in League Two
It's frustrating as hell because at various times most of our youngsters have looked world beaters, maybe because they're young they lack consistently?

Paul Scott and McCombe are the latest "rejects" doing well in League Two ? That's probably because we are a League One team. It's almost like an Arsenal fan moaning because they let go of Ebanks-Blake

Agree there Arnhem. Point is at Town those two they looked League Two. Since leaving they've improved / fullfilled their potential and maybe could play League One now
I think Nathan and Mirf would improve if they moved. They both have ability and individually do well, it's just they don't click together
We've played several experienced centre backs and still conceded goals, Yates, Hughes, Sodje, McIntosh, Sinclair
We wanted a experienced midfielder to shield the defence, Wallwork fits the bill perfectly but again we concede goals
We have one of the best defensive strikers (if you know what I mean) in the league in Booth and still concede
I think the trouble with Mirf and both the Clarkes is that they try to play a bit too much, they'd be better taking a leaf from Pat Scully and Lee Sinnott school of no nonsense, concentrate doing the basics right

Both Clarke and Mirf spend most of their time booting the ball as far and high as possible - how can they possibly be accused of "playing a bit too much"?!!

One of the biggest criticism of Nathan Clarke is that he's always looking to play "hollywood passes". He's not helped by people like Schofield hiding when it's not going to plan The number of times Mirfin plays himself into trouble is untrue, usually by letting a ball bouce that he should just head into touch a la Scully / Sinnott

they are too soft and cant defend - simple as that. no one would care about clarkes passing ability if he did the basics of defending right.
they should be let go - and good luck to them when/if they do move.
442 top 100 in what? 2002?
player of the year from a team that finished 14th - the best of a bad bunch?
league representation two years ago - im sure none of them would get near a league one top 20 now, never mind 11.
time we had a good clear out at the end of the season, hopefully we will still be in league one.

I'd totally agree with you Floyds. The sooner we're rid of BOTH Mirf and Clarke, the better. We've seen them both together and with other partners and they consistently make mistakes. Unfortunately, I don't think they'll ever cut those mistakes out. If we have to keep one in the team until the summer, I'd probably choose Mirf.

I think you're overly hard.
Mirfin and Nathan Clarke are probably the two best defenders we've had since Lucketti left (for £750k!)
I agree together they have problems, don't know why, but individually they're good.
The second time Nathan Clarke got picked for 442 was 2005 (the time we missed out of the play offs, he has been injured for a year so would have been a suprise inclusion in the later polls you must admit!).
Mirfin was voted player of the season in 2007 and you want to give him a free in 2008! Not very patient!

who else was there you would give player of the year too? we finished 14th and were awful all season - i would let all of them go if their contracts were up as well.
well, i cant think of a more overated player then than nathan clarke - whatever the 442 people watch must be different to me.
dont we have the worst defensive record in this poor league?
its not all the centre backs fault obviously but they must take some of the blame.
as for the best defenders since lucketti - not saying much is it? who else have we had?
together the pair of them are useless as they have proved over and over again. maybe if we got a big commanding centre back in alongside either of them then they may look half decent again.
at the moment however they need to concentrate on getting stuck in and being strong!

i agree that we need a clearout at the end of the season.i would get rid of schoffer, brandon nathan clarke.the trouble is i don't know who could replace clarke apart from his brother.are there any more sodjes coming through the ranks.the sodje who is a striker at york looks the business but we need a centreback.
