My laptop HDD went FUBAR the other week - similar noises etc. Cleaning didn't work. I used a normal lens cleaner after an airbrush. I found the easiest solution was to change it! Took the old one out and plugged in a new one. Five minute job. Two hours to reinstall Windows etc and the same again to connect the fubar hdd to the IDE on the desktop and extract the data from it, but in the end I had a 50% increase in capacity and a laptop that worked!
