Every time I plug my printer into the USB socket it comes up with a message saying that it is not recognised, something to do with the device having malfunctioned I've been searching all over google and got nowhere. Tried a couple of solutions; turned my laptop off and disconnected it from the power source, uninstalled the printer, tried desperately to find a way of restoring my printer to factory settings (to no avail) and have ultimately got nowhere. This only seems to be happening for my printer, which could be why the solutions aren't working as no USB devices working at all seems to be a much more common problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll be massively grateful if so!

Go into your device manager and check you have the drivers installed for the printer...

Cheers.
I'm pretty sure I did as I've had the printer a couple of months and it was working fine, I can't check though as I've uninstalled the printer thinking it would sort out the problem, but everytime I reconnect it to try and reinstall it the same message appears.
The printer was working fine, ran out of ink so I replaced the ink cartridge and was prompted to do an alignment test print, as I was in a hurry I cancelled that and just printed out what I needed and ran out the door. Next time I came to print I was prompted to do the alignment print again which I did, but once the printing had finished the printer seemed to freeze, meaning I had to restart it before I could print out what I wanted. Then a couple of days ago I went to print again and this problem began. Could the 'malfunction' be something to do with this?

Have you got the original disc for the printer? If so stick it in and reinstall the drivers. Then the pc should recognise the device.
If not let me know the make model of the printer and ill find you the drivers online...

Managed to reinstall the drivers using the disk, have checked for updates and there aren't any.

Scrap that, just taken the disk out and realised that my mates supposedly identical printer is actually different.
I have a HP Deskjet 1050 All-in-One j410 series. If you could link me to the drivers that would be fantastic!

It's there as 'unknown device'.

Right click it and select update driver software...

The best driver is installed apparently. It says the driver version is 6.1.7600.20589. Made by Microsoft and dated 21/06/2006 .

Seen this before with printers, took me ages to fix but this worked for me :
Shut down the pc. Now unplug from the power socket, leave for a couple of mins, plug back in and see what happens.
Some pc's dont completely reset the hardware, unless you remove the power source.
Hope it helps.....

Thanks for the suggestion, doesn't seem to have worked though. Will try again but take the battery out too this time to make sure the power is completely removed.

I have had similar problems, got a 3 in 1 printer and it wouldn't scan or photocopy only print, trick is to try different USB ports. Same thing happened Saturday when I got a memory stick for a digital photo frame. First USB port would not recognise the stick but the second would.
