My PC hard drive is showing only 500mb left out of 70g.
I've deleted everything I could and done a search and found no big files, though when right clicking on my C:/Windows file it says there is 42g in there, this can't be right surely?
Any help much appreciated.

I wouldn't turn that off and start deleting files, you are asking for trouble.

Have a look under ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS / COMPUTER MANAGEMENT / STORAGE / DISK MANAGEMENT. You may find you have a hidden partition that is used for Restore purposes? Mike

youur best bet is to go to your control panel and go to add/remove software and get rid of everything you never use and know you will never need in the near future (or you have a backed up). Before this you might want to check out your " My Doucuments" folder, you'd be surprised how many programs store gunk in here. Next check ur system directory (i'm guessing c: ), lots of crap is often stored here. Failing this, you need to go and buy a bigger HD, 70Gb gets filled awfully fast these days.

I’m assuming you’ve got XP here.
Lots of confusing and conflicting, and in some cases wrong, help given here. You’re right, you shouldn’t normally have 42Gb in your Windows folder.
You need to be able to see all files and folders.
In Explorer go to Tools > Options > View
Select Show hidden files and folders and deselect Hide protected operating system files
Click on apply to all folders and then OK.
Then Open your windows folder and find out which subfolder is taking all the space. You should be able to delete all the files in c:\windows\temp.
