Hi, I'm in urgent need of help! I had an portable external hard drive that had all my old photos on and documents. I got a new lappy recently and instead of loading everything on there I just kept them on my external hard drive, then, disisater. I used it on my fiances PC....and for some reason it crashed and i had to take the portable external hard drive out. Now for some reaon whenever I plug it into a usb slot on many pc's and laptops it shows that it there, the light comes on, but it does nto show its there in my computer. If I go to safely remove hardware it shows its there, but I jsut cant view any data nor save anything to it.....it's almost as if it hasnt been formatted or something, but i know i have all my data on it. Any idea what I can do, I havent taken it into a shop to explore (within the photos theres a few candid ones of me and my fiance...... Any ideas what I can do?

When you go to my computer does it show as a drive? I have loads of issues with my WD one... Usually have to run a chkdsk from the command prompt to fix any sector issues. If you can get your Laptop to acknowledge it as a drive then you'll be fine... got to Start > Run > CMD then change to the drive (e.g. F:) then type in CHKDSK /F /R and it should fix it for you... Here's a reasonable guide.... support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Try another USB cable or a firewire one preferably. Also have a look in Device Manager to see if there's an error with the USB port. Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.

In vista just click on Start and in the search bar type CMD and follow from there.
