I have an external 500 Gb on which i store all my music, videos, and "artistic material". Today whilst drafting a letter my pc went berserk and said windows had basically fucked up and the external (F) drive had been wiped. I managed to get the f drive going again and got all my files back by swapping USB connections around.
Any advice on how to stop this happening again? I thought that by having the external drive I couldn't lose files due to crashes etc.
Any help would be appreciated.

You will always be vulnerable to the drive crashing whether it's internal or external. It sounds as though you're using the external drive as your main data store and opening files directly from it. If you're using MS Word to open files on a USB drive then it's more risky (and a great deal slower) than having the drive internal.
If you want backups do your work on the internal drive and copy the files to the external one. There's an M$ product called Robocopy that you can use to copy folders and files, and it's free.
