The wife has just tried to install something from disc.
She restarted the computer when asked, but it won't go past the 'windows xp' screen. The cursor is on there - but that's it.
I've tried everything I can to solve it - which is basically turning it on and off quickly twice in a row to trick it into working. Alas, to no avail.
Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the advice mate.
Unfortunately, it didn't work - but I much appreciated the reply!
All this because of the missus trying to install a nodding usb cat - or some such sh**e!

It's F8 to boot in safe mode not F11. Turn on comp and keep tapping f8 until menu appears and boot into safe mode, shut-down normally and try booting it up again and hopefully this should sort it. If not, you could try booting up from your windows operating disc and use the repair function to see if that works. You need to have boot from disc option enabled in your BIOS and it's prority nees to be higher than the HDD (this should already be the case unless you have changed the BIOS settings).
The only other things i can suggest are to try your Hard Disk in another computer if possible to see if it boots from there, if it does then you have another problem with your computer most likely faulty RAM.
If all else fails, usually a fresh install of windows is required, boot up your computer from the operating disc and choose a fresh windows install, delete any old partitions and (most people only have one partition where the old windows was)a pain in the arse if you haven't got everything backed up, but unless anyone knows otherwise it normally sorts out messed up Hard Drives.

Thanks a ton mate!
I did the f8 thing. Although the safe mode was just the same as the normal start-up, I did the "restart from last good config option" (?) thing which obvioulsy worked - as I'm on the computer now!
Cheers again - I owe you a pint!
p.s also a good thing I've got internet on me phone to ask for help, or I'd have been totally screwed!
