1. I have recently aquired sky broadband and the signal strength from router & bt adapter is low. Does this matter, if so how do I improve it? 2. My computer runs very slow especially when on internet and playing football manager 2007. I have bought 1 gig of ram, will this help and is it easy to install, concerned about this static thing & blowing computer!! Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance..

Q2 - dead easy to install, just push it in. As for the static, leave your computed plugged in but ensure the electic supply is off, before you handle the memory touch the metal casing of your computer, this will earth you and remove any static you have.

Is this a wireless connection or a dongle or do you access the Internet via a wired Network? I would check the coverage on the Sky website for your area as you may live in an area with gash coverage. 2. My computer runs very slow especially when on internet and playing football manager 2007. Footy Manager takes up a lot of Virtual memory which can be solved by getting more RAM or finding the route cause of the issue by looking in Task Manager and ordering the columns by Virtual Memory size and seeing what is using all the space. If VM Size isn't there click on view and add columns and tick VM Size. If the internet is running slow I would also make sure your anti virus/spyware is up to date and run an anti virus/malware and spyware sweep. You can download spybot for free which will sort out your spyware issues.

1. Its a USB wireless adapter.. Its actually stopped working now so will have to send it back!! Had trouble with linksy one before this one (it didn't even detect router!!)
2. Think my virus etc is ok and got 12months mcafee package.. Would this sort it or is spybot totally different!!?? Don't think vm size is visible, do i delete unnecessary things out of there and if so what is unnecessary?
I actually thought i was very knowledgable about computers, maybe not!!?!!

As long as your connection to the network is still faster than the broadband speed then this doesn't matter. It almost certainly will be, the exception to this would be if you are using the computer to stream media (specifically video) as you'd need a faster connection to your network. If your not experiencing any drop outs and your not streaming media then you'll get no benefit from boosting your connection signal.

Aye get it sent back. McAfee is your anti virus so run an AV check. If I was you I'd go to www.nsanedown.com/?page=securityand have a field day. Get Spybot and Superantispyware from the anti-malware section, zone alarm from the firewalls and you should then be set for any attacks and attempts to slow down your machine. You didn't use to have (G)AOL either by any chance did you?

We've put up with Sky wireless broadband for 12 months now, and it really hasn't been great. The router they send you is crap to put it mildly, depending on how far away your computer is from the router i'd consider buying a better router/connect it using wires.

[/quote the routers sky send are fine, what you will find is the equipment in the exchange is gash and caused the broadband signal your router to drop out. ring sky up and complain they will eventually sort it out with a bit of perisitance!

Where do I start..
HuddRatMatt - A field day doing what, downloading software which will speed up my computer!! Was going to do RegCure but heard bad reports and it costs money!! This is easy quick and free i guess?? Didn't have AOL! I checked VM Size I think checked right bit! Is it processes. mcshield uses 30k svchost 9k mcnasvc uses 6k along with lots of others. In performance system cache uses 30k cpu usage 2% Does any of this make sense and am I looking at the right thing? If so what next!!!??
Dell/Prestonterrier - Router is downstairs computer upstairs. What is the exchange is gash all about? Complain to sky about what??
Getting there!! Guessing the memory thing is the best way to go regarding speeding up football manager and t'internet??

Yup download, install and run the software I recommended - it's free. The processes seem normal so I would maybe put that down to memory - how much do you have? To find out you can right click on My Computer > Select Properties and it will tell you under the general tab. i.e 2.0gb of RAM etc... If you have under 0.5gb I'd purchase some more. Aol is an expletive for infiltrating your registry and making new ISP's run slowly. I'd download the software firat and give it a whirl.

firat? someone mentioned spybot and kapersky!? computer has a massive 128mb!! I mean't first not firat - d'oh. Kaspersky is great but you'd need to pay for it although on that website there are a few freebies of older versions or trials - although you already have McAfee which does a similar job. 128mb isn't enough to run Footy Manager and will cause your machine to die a slow painful death. The recommended spec for football manager is: Windows XP SP2 O/S, 2.0 GHz processor, 256MB RAM, 8x CD ROM I would make expanding your RAM your top priority. I have 3gb and still find my PC slow sometimes when running multiple applications.... I'm impatient ;D Come to think of it if you have McAfee installed it will probably perform a number of checks when you launch the internet therefore making it slow. Anyway - in short get some more ram. I would go to www.crucial.co.uk and run the online compatibility test which will tell you which one to purchase as it will work out what is compatible with your machine. Write down the model number of the RAM and then buy it from Ebuyer as they're usually the cheapest. If you're not confident about putting the ram in and would prefer someone else to do it you can always use CCL Computers if you're based in West Yorkshire. Best of luck Edit: Also - make sure you have a decent processor speed as no matter how much RAM you have if you have a gash processor it'll still run slow. You can find out how fast it is by looking in My COmputer - Properties and under the general tab. Don't despair if it doesn't say 2.0. If you're unsure just post your details on ehre and I'll let you know.
