Did you go and look for the wall?

we found loads of the wall. it was ace.
nobody asked to see my papers though, that was the only bit of disappointment of the whole trip

Herr Flick is now an IT manager somewhere so there's a chance that sith could get the double slap with leather gloves at work one day.

How can it be the best new years ever in a city full of germans? I bet nobody missed the countdown for starters....

Oi, drinking with boxheads is ace. They just don't know when they're beaten.

yes we did find the bunker. it's a car park. they built the holocaust memorial right next to it.
drinking bier, schwarzbier, weissbeir, gluhwein & grog with 1000000 germans was great.

Good work. Didn't they concrete it in?
I think that they have hidden the place where Hitler was burned, but you may be able to tell me differently.

the russians destroyed it and concreted it over, then they opened it up and concreted it over again. then dug it all out, concreted it over again and then put a car park on top.
the russians and the german sense of national guilt means that pretty much nothing of the nazi era remains - nowadays though the germans are able to talk about stuff so there's loads of signs saying 'gestapo building was here'
there's more of east germany there than you think though - if you look hard enough. the traffic lights were best.

I'd heard that you can still tell when you enter East Berlin as the buildings are still Communist monstrosities. I assume that they are changing that though.

There's a range of monstrosities in all parts of the city which is as much a function of it being flattened in the war as anything else. What has been restored or newly built is often astonishing though. When we arrived we thought it was pretty bleak but it sort of gets under your skin. Shot towards the top of my favourite cities list that's for sure. I'll never forget standing in on top of the Reichstag in the snow yesterday afternoon.

cf. Elephant and Castle. Or Coventry for that matter. Not sure what Sheffield's excuse is.

Is Berlin as cheap for a capital city as I've heard it is? How much for beer? How much for reasonable hotel? How much for decent meal for two with a bottle of wine?

How I failed to shag a stunning Spanish bird I was sharing a dorm with in a youth hostel in Berlin in 2000 will forever remain a mystery. See also - losing her e-mail address. FFS.

brommers. we did the whole 3 days, incl playing for place to stay on 500E. if you're happy to eat your weight in sausages you can do lunch for less than 5E, incl a beer.
reasonable hotel? we stayed at Ostel, der DDR hostel no less, for 130E* for 3 days. the 2 nights we had food we spent 40E (1 course and drinks**) and 55E (2 ENORMASS courses and drinks**)
there'll be better places to stay, in more affluent areas, but where we went was really great. it was 5 min walk to ostbahnhof, which was 5 mins from the centre of town. trains are remarkably on time all the time and cheap as chips.
*half price mind, they fucked things up and we beat them into a deal
** only one of us was drinking. the other wasn't allowed to, the nhs frowns upon these things these days. yay for nsn and her rapidly growing womb

no shit indeed sidey
we need bernie and his frankly creepy knowledge of the bosche's WWII activities to set me straight.
the C20th is a bit modern for me. My current obsession is with the decline of the Roman republic. That Sulla was a right double hard bastard, i tell thee.
