We had Soup a l'Oignon with large gruyere croutons. Total food cost: 55p.
I may be loaded but that's only because I'm thrifty.

and for a couple of quid more you could have fed 4 people for 3 nights on something that hadn't spent it's entire life in a japanese prisoner of war camp

In my defence, I was 17 and I realised my stupidity once I left home and had to feed myself.
You middle-class country dwellers can eat what the devil you want but taking away cheap processed food from the masses is taking it a step too far.

I think that the masses lost their taste buds generations go.
The good news I found mine when I stopped buying chemically pumped up chicken and went for the free rangers.

Beef and Guinness Stew. Sainsbury's beef from out of the freezer. Cooked on a Heston heat all afternoon.
Re difference in taste between ethical and supermarket meat, I recall Rick Stein doing blind taste tests on a variety of meats on his Food Heroes programme and more often than not choosing the supermarket meat rather than the lovingly reared organic.
I want the government to remove the cap on student fee rates so that fewer students end up going to university so that my area can be repopulated by the yogurt knitting types that used to proliferate and supported a brilliant traditional (had game hanging in the shop, smelt like the Covered Market in Oxford) butcher who went to trade sales only and had his shop taken over by yet another bloody charity shop (albeit that it was at least the very ace Oxfam book shop - although I'd much rather they'd just taken over somewhere shoddy like the PDSA "do you want a bag with that dear" shop).

Rick Stein is ace!
The only one he got seriously wrong was the chicken, and he was the only one in the room that did! everybody else went for the free range.
Last night I had pan fried breast of wild mallard with a brandy orange sauce.

I don't think that would help you, AB. Headingley seems to be largely full of the student types who are entirely bankrolled by Mummy and Daddy. Remove the cap and you'll only price the normal students out of the market; the annoying, cuntish, far-more-of-daddy's-money-than-sense fuckwits will remain and indeed proliferate. And nobody wants that.
Besides which, aren't you supposed to be moving?
