This fixture always reminds me of one of my favourite games ever although we lost it was 1976 FA cup 4th round we were in division 4 they were in division 2 I think and managed by our old boss Ian Greaves they had the likes of Sam Allardyce and Peter Reid playing for them it had been quite a while since we had seen a large crowd and 27,894 turned up and the atmosphere was electric. My name sake tells the tale of going round Allardyce in the first few minutes and promptly told that if he did that again he would get his f****** leg broke, its a good job he became a bit of a hero in later years. I was 14 and in the cowshed there must have been around 3000 Bolton fans in the terrace that day just to the left of the shed and one thing that always makes me laugh was the sight of Harry Belafonte taking them all on !! he started at the top of the terrace and worked his way down to the bottom I will never forget the round of applause he got as he was carried on a stretcher by 2 St Johns Ambulance men along the front of the shed arm held aloft with a Town round his wrist in triumph. Happy Days UTT

Happy Days UTT my memory is a little different. crowd being around 25,000 and i'd estimate a little under half the crowd was bolton. i was on the terrace with my dad and there were an incredible number of bolton fans there that day. also another memory is the outside wall of the terrave being spray painted with 'MATT - BWFC' and then going to blackpool in the summer and someone had managed to spraypaint the same thing at the top of the black dipper. also remember my dad leaving me by the car at the front of the main car park at the back of the terrace at the end of the game and a group of older bolton fans offering me to one of their young uns to beat up. fortunately he was crapping himself more than me and declined the opportunity and they laughed and moved on (phew!!!)

My favourite Town memory was also against Bolton because it was my first game back in 1965. Big crowd and lots of banter between the supporters of both teams (no crowd segregation in those days). Late in the game it was still nil-nil and then Town's number seven picked up the ball on half-way, ran 30 yards and then cut inside and hit a screamer into the top corner. The place exploded and we held on to win 1-0. Step forward Kev Mchale, my first Town hero : :

Jaaskelainen dropping several clangers in one match then becoming a really good keeper in the next few years is one thing I remember. sure the game finished 3-2 one way or the other

I remember drawing 2-2 at the Reebok when I was a kid. I sat at the back of the lower tier, and when we won a penalty at our end, I ran down the stairs to behind the goal in complete excitement, just waiting to celebrate the inevitable goal to come!
Craig Armstrong bloody missed it.

Craig Armstrong bloody missed it. I remember that game, it was in our relegation year. We were 2-1 up when we missed the pen then they were awarded a free kick in the last few mins, it was not a free kick in a million years but it was put away from 25 yards. I left that game feeling very dejected.

My third ever Town game I saw was against Bolton Wanderers in September 1965. Town won 1-0 thanks to a McHale goal in the 72nd minute in front of nearly 25k. John Coddington hit a penalty miles wide at the open end in the first few minutes. It was an evening game and Leeds Road was rocking. I remember it as if it was yesterday ;-)

Away game at Burden park, sometime in mid 60s. Lost 3-0 at Burden Park, Franny Lee hat-trick. Miserable day out.
A few of us left the match and legged it back to station with about 15 mins to go (sorry). To top a bad day out, we arrived at the station to find a Bolton 'mob' waiting for us and had to run the gaunlet. Train then bricked on way out (different thread I know).

Town 3 Bolton 2. What a fucking great game this was, Tuesday night and the place was rocking. Craig Armstrong scored a screamer (think it was his home debut) and Nico Vaesen gave one of the best goalkeeping performances I have ever seen. He nearly scored too, as one of his bombs bounced over the keeper and went wide (or he recovered cant remember!). Their keeper was absolute bobbins that night, went by the name of Jussi Jasskalenien! Never turned out to be much

I know it's not about the actual match but during the eighties we were at home to Bolton and me our kid were walking down to the ground, just getting past the wagon and horses i think, it just kicked off inside, a guy actually came through the window cartoon style and carried on running over the road!!! i was only about 11 year old and couldn't believe what i was seeing!!!!!!! :boxing: :boxing:

The lad climbing up the floodlight. Black Pete, what a star he is. I've got a feeling that one of their fans also climbed the Leeds Road floodlights during the afore mentioned match from the late 80's ? The match ended 1-1 I think. When we were both in the third tier we always tended to play each other either very early in the season or very late. A few other memories: 1) First ever trip to Burnden Park late 1980's (maybe '89) and getting the shock of our lives when we discovered that the away end had been literally cut down the middle and replaced with a Normid Superstore. What an eyseore that was. As a young lad it was supposed to be a birthday treat, but we lost 3-1 wearing the infamous bruised banana kit. I think Maskell scored a penalty for us. 2) 2-2 draw at Burnden the following season (another Birthday outing, two seasons running !). Penultimate game of the season and Town could no longer qualify for play offs after their customary second half of the season collapse. We played really well on the night, only to concede the usual late equaliser. 3) 4-0 win at home with Keith Edwards scoring a hat-trick. Bolton had gubbed us the previous week in the Littlewoods Cup (or whatever it was known as then). We drafted in a lad called Peter Jackson in on a free transfer from Sadford earlier in the week, and he settled a fragile defence. I think Edwards only scored one more that season. 4) 1-1 draw on the opening day of the season at Burnden. Marsden scored (I think). Remember the game mostly for 'Coco' Clarke making his debut and looking very uncertain. 5) 1-1 draw at Burnden on a cold January day. Hardly any games were on that day (only 4 or 5 in the entire FL) but Bolton had undersoil heating. Haylock scored for Town, but lightweight Terriers gave their hosts a usual late equaliser. Probably David Lee, he always ripped us a new one every time he played against us ! 6) First trip to Reebok and losing 2-0 (or 3-0) under Jacko. Arrived just in time for kick off after friend driving followed wrong road signs and ended up outside a semi-demolished Burnden Park. Arnar Gunnlaugsson tore us apart and game was over at half time. 7) Going to Reebok in Bruce's first season. Lucketti broke leg, and Monkou did his hamstring. First sign of wheels falling off that season, although Gray and Dyson did a sterling job deputising for much of the remaining matches. 8) 2-2 draw and missed pen from Amstrong (as discussed) 9) Miserable 3-0 late season home defeat to Allardyce's Bolton, missed opportunity to qualify for play offs. 10) Miserable home defeat, shortly before Bruce was sacked. We were so desperate for a striker that we signed Kevin Kyle, who appeared in this game. 11) Town greats played for both clubs: David Burke, Paul Jones, Phil Wilson, Sam Allardyce and Simon Charlton. Sums up the the ups and downs of following Town with just one opponent

Grant Johnson scored a peach an'all. Think Dean Holdsworth scored one of theirs. Cracking game. And if people wonder why we're not getting bigger crowds now we were pushing for the Championship play-offs at that time (March 1999) and the crowd was 13,867.

Yes, and I think Bolton brought over nearly a full 4000 allocation over that night. It was a filthy wet night, and the home 'faithful' were starting to lose patience with Jacko prior to this game. Was it shortly after Rubery took over ? Bolton had made some cracking signings from the Scandinavian market over the previous few years, Per Frandsen, Michael Johansen, Claus Jensen, Jussi Jaaskelainen, Bo Hansen plus the old stager Gudni Bergsson who had been at Spurs. It was a real shame relief that Todd couldn't repeat his success at Bolton in his spell at Sadford ...
