We won't be paying that so it will be either a loan or subsidised wages for remainder of his contract. Probably what the delay is about.

If he signs he'll be the highest paid player at this club. He's on £20k p/w at Boro. No he's not.....

Imagine the pay out from Boro that he's rumoured to be waiting for would supplement his wage with Town.

You now say "no he's not" and it fools jwhudd802 into saying "yes he is"! It's an old trick I learned in the playground.

BoltonTerrier seemed to post with some authority last night that the delay is caused by some loyalty payment due from Boro. He's happy to come here and things will resume today.

He hasnt asked for a transfer so he is due a loyalty payment, I would imagine he is also negotiating a "relocation bonus" as he doesnt want to leave. He will have a decent agent if he played in the prem, so he will be milking it for all its worth. Still rings alarm bells for if we ever want to get shut of him!!

Northern echo this morning...
Boro officials thought they had made a significant breakthrough in their pursuit of Clayton earlier in the week, with Huddersfield having agreed to a proposed deal that would have seen Butterfield moving in the opposite direction to the John Smith’s Stadium.
The agreement hit a hitch when Butterfield, who trained with the rest of the Boro squad at Rockliffe Park yesterday morning, refused to join the Terriers, although talks were ongoing yesterday afternoon in an attempt to persuade him to alter his stance.
Huddersfield are still willing to sell Clayton, but their manager, Mark Robins, is demanding that an experienced replacement is in place before the midfielder is allowed to leave. Conor Coady completed a £375,000 move from Liverpool to Huddersfield on Tuesday, but Robins regards the 21-year-old as a future prospect rather than a direct replacement for Clayton.
“Adam Clayton is a very good player, but at the moment he is not my player and I prefer to just speak about the players that are my players,” said Karanka.
“Jacob Butterfield is my player. At the moment, he could be the best player in his position because he is my player. In one day, two days, one week or one month, I do not know what will happen. But at the moment, I will only say good things about Butterfield because he is a very good player.
Looks unlikley he will end up here to me!

Could town be holding out for them to make someone available to us who more closely fits what we actually need to sign, a striker or defender? IE. has He asked for one person and they've offered butterfield instead AND robins has decided to play hardball by not offering Butterfield satisfactory terms. is Robins willing to walk away from the deal if he doesn't get what he wants.... all I am suggesting is maybe Town are still holding the reigns and making things difficult as Boro really want Clayton.

Looks like an article designed to save a bit of face for Boro to me! Town dont NEED to sell,Boro could easily be going into the season without having improved a position they decided they needed to. Maybe they will learn something from this, and not be so quick to give a story to their local press in future?!

We can hope.

Spoken to a boro fan at work and his take on the situation is this...
Clayton all agreed but as Bolton terrier reported last night, butterfield move has hit a snag on loyalty payment. We won't let clayton go until this is sorted and butterfield can come to us. Butterfield happy to come here and play for robins and the rumour he turned us down is rubbish.
He's not happy to lose butterfield and would rather keep him but butterfield knows that when clayton signs for them he won't be first choice, obvious from their managers comments this morning that butterfield is only first choice at the moment.

Quality replacement for Clayton.
However, our biggest weaknesses in midfield last season were that it lacked defensive capability (addressed by signing Coady to compete with Hogg), it lacked the link between midfield and attack (we've brought in Majewski, Holmes could step up and Lolley looks made for a false 10 role). Also lacked leadership, but I question whether Butterfield brings much of that.
We haven't consistently got the best out of Norwood, but I wonder how much of that was due to him being most effective in the Clayton role.
Then there's the pathways. Look at our most promising youth players and a lot of them play a central midfield role.
Mixed feelings on this turn to concern about spending valuable resources on midfield, at the expense of defence and attack.
