Yes I realise one game doesn't define the season, but I really think Saturday will be a good pointer as to which way we're going. A win and I can see us heading up the table, hopefully for a play off spot, anything else and mid table / struggle would be the best I think. Yes I'm pleased as punch with the current form, but it hasn't moved us far, and I really think we've got a good enough squad to be getting into the play-offs. Just needs the players and some fans on here to believe in themselves. That third relegation spot though is wide open, assuming the other two as many do, are basically basket cases, which really isn't a certainty at this time of the season. So come on Town, I'm optimistic, well at least until 4.45pm on Saturday!

Play-offs? Yes, you truly are optimistic. I hope for a win, of course, but have no delusions of play-offs in May.

Why use the thread tittle make or break we still have a handful of good players out plus a transfer window to come and they will be 93 points to go for Saturday's game will be hard but it is still only 3 points to be won or lost

Hardly a make or break game. However, it does provide a good test to see how much we've improved - the teams we've played in this run have hardly been the strongest in the league.
I consider myself optimistic when it comes to Town, but I don't harbour any realistic hopes that we'll be in the play offs come the end the season

Win and it will be a brilliant result and probably move us 2 or 3 places higher in the table, draw will be a decent result and we'll probably move a place either way, defeat would be disappointing but not the end of the world or the season.
I don't think we'll have any "make or break" games this season I think we'll establish ourselves as a hard to beat side that is again moving forward and maybe edge in to the top half of the table which would be an excellent season. If that happens then depending on what we can do in the summer we could look towards having a challenge at the play offs next season. For now I'm just happy to see us being enjoyable to watch again and being competitive.

Had we lost at Ipswich they would've been 3 points off top. Blackburn are 1 point off the play offs. Millwall have just gone 4 unbeaten against Derby, Wolves, Cardiff and Wigan. They haven't been the easiest games.

OK I should have called the thread, "Pointer' then, which is the term I used in the thread itself. And I also stated one game won't define the season, so agree it's only three points. I was just stating that at least to me, it SEEMS to be a significant game that will give an INDICATION of possible future movement, up, down or static. First responder one of the pessimists mentioned, though no doubt they'll use the word realist. Plenty of worse squads than Town have made the play offs, and I really see no reason at all why we can't, apart maybe from six better teams. As a number of them, Forest included are having poor spells, I'm not convinced there are six better teams. Wrongly or rightly and probably rather sadly, I go to watch expecting us to hammer teams every week, probably like a good number of other supporters. Thankfully I'm too old to get bothered when we don't. ie. Not sulking, kicking the cat / dog or even worse wife, or even getting hammered. It's a game of football and that's all.

Basically I can't imagine any of these six teams making the play offs at the end of the season. That said, Forest haven't won in eight either!

Make or Break - playoffs
Insane post
Relax - winning or losing on Saturday won't show you anything over the long term. Its one game.

As with every game this season.
If we win, then the pessimists will point to a Forest side devoid of confidence without a win in x games, the optimists will be eulogising over CP and his appointment and looking how far away the playoffs are.
If we draw, the pessimists will look to reasons why we didn't win and what players/tactics were at fault, the optimists will look to a hard earned result securing a vital point in our continued unbeaten run.
If we lose, the pessimists will say they saw this result coming and our tactics/players aren't good enough and the unbeaten run should be ignored as we were lucky. The optimists will say the unbeaten run was bound to come to an end soon and look to reasons why we lost... referee and luck.
Whatever the result the pragmatists will say it's only one match out of the 46 that will determine our fate for the season and anything can happen in a single game in any season without it somehow foretelling our future.

I completely agree with Doc but would add the caveat that there are a few things that might foretell the future; notably an injury to a first team player.

People need to be realistic and appreciate they are ALOT stronger than us and even if we lose, if we put in a good performance it will be a massive improvement

Agree it will be a very good barometer, we've done well so far against some decent sides but forest are genuine contenders and their poor run means nothing really. Would be great to win against one of the better championship teams and one which always seems to dick us. Two very tough looking games after that so the scary thing is we need to be top of our game to avoid losing three on the bounce and slipping back down league!

The last 2 and next 2 games added together might be a pointer. One team from lower third, one from middle and a couple from top third places. If we get a decent points haul from those four games it gives us some indication as to the direction we're heading.

Four or five points from the next three games would be good in my opinion.. Six would be excellent.. Seven or nine (quite possible the way we're playing) would be playoff material.. Like most of the other teams in this once again anyone can beat anyone league, we have no fear, and our growing confidence will get stronger as the season goes on.. Far less attractive teams than us have made the promised premiership land, so hey this could just be our season.. BELIEVE

We started talking about play offs in our first season in the championship and look where we ended. We're not ready for that yet. Not ready?. When will we be ready?. Burnley weren't ready last season, and were amongst the favorites to be relegated.. Get promoted, spend fuck all, enjoy the buzz, build a better fan base, get relegated, take the parachute payments.. Maybe then we'll be ready..

Saturday is the most important game of the season simply because its next. They are all 'make or break' simply because you cannot play for those 3 points again.. The game is only wasted if win, lose or draw you don't learn anything from it.

We were Wolves bogey team, and Forest haven't lost in the last 9 meetings with us (6 wins and 3 draws), our last win was 9 years ago and it probably helped that they finished that game with 9 men.

And herein lies the problem, lose and the cries of 'get rid' or 'we shouldn't have appointed him' etc etc ,win a few games and we are champion contenders.I said at the outset when Cp seemed to be struggling he needed time. Why the hell can't we settle down and take this season one game at a time, no pointers or make or break, but a solid team performance please. The league is very tight at the moment, and to speculate at this point in the season is a bit silly, to consider basing the likely outcome of the rest of the season on one game is ludicrous. We are starting to look like a solid team, the consistency of that solidity on a match by match basis is what I am looking for. If come February we are in the top half and are still playing well, then yes by all means speculate, but not just yet.

The result on Saturday could well depend on whether CP has the potential match winners on the pitch for long enough.

We are welcoming Forest at a good time as far as we are concerned. No reason why our form cannot carry us through to three points.

Were 25/1 with the bookies to finish top 6, although I don't think we will make the play offs, given our current form and number of games left, I do think those odds are generous. You simply can't say we have no chance, it can be done.

Think play offs are a bit beyond us but I see no reason that why we couldn't finish anywhere between 7th and 12th, that would be an excellent season for me. If we do achieve a finish like that a play off tilt next season has to be the target.

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the OP and looking too much into his playoffs comment.
I think he has a point by saying Saturday (as well as the games at Derby and Fulham) will be a good indicator of what we can achieve this season. Most other teams will probably look at us as little ol' Huddersfield who can't take on the big guys like Forest/Derby/Ex Prem teams consistently and have no chance of going higher than lower/mid-table, and equally there's no shame in losing to those teams..
But after this run of 6 unbeaten against a mixed set of teams, the next week will really be a good indicator of where we might end up. We've put some good results together in the past, but never looked like keeping it up. Win a few/stay unbeaten against 3 strong teams and people will start to sit up and take notice...

As ever, it will be the Christmas period that sets up our season, when the first round of fixtures are complete.

4 points in next 3 games would be an excellent return. Final position between 13th and 16th would be an overachievement. Bad news for Saturday - I will be there and Town never win when I go. Despite going to a decent number of games home and away, I haven't see them win for over 4 years (Yeovil 4-2)
