The son of a pal of came across an all time hero of mine to-day at a Strachan foundation do. Colin Dobson - he is scouting for Stoke city. The lad asked him if he had ever played The answer " Yes a bit " Who for ? " how about England, but it was a bit before your time " Brilliant reply and what a player. Left winger/ inside forward quick with a cracking shot and the best penalty taker I have seen at Town.Got himself knocked out scoring a goal from a keepers clearance away at the manor ground on the opening day of the promotion season. Happy memories

I recall Colin as a gifted player with excellent technique. As you say, great penalty taker. He never quite made full England, but turned out twice for the national team at U23 level (I think that was before joining Town). Good to know he is still involved in the game.

"D-O-B-S-O-N Dobson is our King Again" Loved watching him play. One of my all time fav Town players. Incidentally, my local pub is run by a Rovers Gashead mate of mine and he has lots of old pictures of Rovers teams on the pub walls.Dobson is on a couple of them and was a fav of the Gasheads as well.

Good player who forged an excellent partnership with Tony Leighton (RIP)in his early days with Town. A little known fact is that he scored our first goal away from home in the old first division, back in 70/71. As said above he had an excellent record taking penalties but he always put the ball in exactly the same place, about an inch inside the left hand post. It always puzzled me why he never got found out, maybe the opposition didn't do their homework so much back in those days.

Hey up Bob, not Dobson related but, I was at Travis Perkins the other week and asked the yard man if the nearby Tesco used to be Rovers Eastville ground ? Yes, why ? I thought it was, I've been a few times. Oh, for the speedway ? No, to watch Town. We then reminisced on the gypo stewards and Alan Ball scoring their winner, apparently just after Bobby Gould had left and going on a train special and walking through the St Paul's district while the early 80s riots were in full swing.

I was at that game and I think it was the same day a Town fan was killed in an accident on the way down. Lots of scrapping that day. Remember a load of Rovers fans banging on a Luton van in the car park and trying to pull the driver out of the cab. They got a bit of a shock when the back rolled up and about 16 Town fans jumped out!! I am a Gashead when it comes to Bristol football and although the Ikea has been open over 20 years now I promised my Rovers mates I would never set foot in it and I haven't done so to this day.

"colin, colin Dobson, colin Dobson on the wing"... I wanted to be a flying winger when I was a kid watching him. My dad said to watch him when I first started going. He also pointed out that he "could take care of himself"... very fond memories..

Better than Eusebio if I remember correctly Haven't we had this thread before in the last three months. I distinctly remember typing Aye, aye, aye, aye Oldfield is better that Yashin Dobson is better than Eusabio and L**ds are in for a thrashing One of our finest ginners.

Another oldie here for whom this sparks happy memories:
My best memory of Colin was about the time of the Mexico Olympics a few of us went to Hull to watch Town and although we lost (comfortably) the City fans were commenting on what a good player he was ----
I asked a few of them; "Would you prefer him to Ken Wagstaffe?" (some player!! who remembers him??) and they were all for doing a swap ---- We, of course, would have none of it..
Looking forward to a good game (hopefully a win) tomorrow

Certainly remember Ken Wagstaffe - as much as I liked Dobson - I think I would have gone for the swap.

Yeah, Sunny that used to organise the Town Travel Club, think the mob that attacked the van included Timmy Archer, who ended up losing an eye and a lot of Town fans paid a price for it !!

One of my all time favourites too. I was a goal-scoring left winger myself but I got no further than playing for my Uni side!

Can`t remember what I did last week these days, but I remember that ! Has a look of Paul Scholes about him, again if my memory is not mistaken !

I remember it was the start of the Mexico games because we travelled by car (one of the rare occasions) and we got holed up in a pub somewhere near Selby on the way back watching some of the opening ceremony. Thinking about it now; I mustn't have been a p*ssed as I thought I was at the time UTT

Saw him play but the memory is early and hazy. My first game was 70 so he was in and out by that time and when i started regularly in 1975 he was gone.

It always puzzled me why he never got found out, maybe the opposition didn't do their homework so much back in those days. At that time the goalie had to stand still on his line, in the middle of the goal, until the ball was kicked. Even knowing where Dobson was going to put it a save would be impossible unless it were misplaced or under-hit. According to the current Law 14, most penalty kicks should be retaken due to encroachment. Several players from both sides are normally closer than 10 yards when the ball is kicked. If the keeper saves it he generally has at least one foot in the penalty area prior to the ball being struck. Both instances require a retake.

Willing to bow to the above posters regarding position, but I don't remember him as a winger? Certainly in 66 to 67 when he made 37 appearances the forward line was Hill and Hellawell as wingers and Dobson, Leighton and Clark as the front three, still playing 2,3,5 in those days of course. Maybe after then, as Hill and Hellawell weren't around he moved to the wing, but if so I've not remembered it. Certainly on the 8th April against Bury the scorers were Clark, Hill, Leighton, Dobson (pen) and Hellawell scored in January so all were around then.

That was a good forward line and for a few years we were challenging for promotion before we finally made it in '70. Dobson started off as a winger but later changed to a more central role. He made fewer appearances after we signed Jimmy Lawson but still played is part before moving on.
