Peter Shilton, of course, saved an Andreas Brehme penalty in a 3-0 England win against West Germany in 1985. Just, y'know, mentioning it.

Always thought Shilton was poor, but I probably only remember seeing him once his best days were behind him. As mentioned, he was a disaster at Italia 90 and when he was at Derby every goal of the month competition on Match of the Day comprised of him being beaten from 40 yards (always as he watched the ball sail in the commentator would be saying "you don't see Peter Shilton beaten from that distance"). My old man and Grandad reckoned he was overrated and Clemence was better. Only one of them, as far as I'm aware, used to hang from the bannister in order to stretch their arms though ...

Rooney got caught out shagging a rather senior hooker. Shilts got caught with another blokes wife in a car hed just crashed. Something to compare perhaps? Well done to Rooney on 100 caps. great achievement and almost certain to end up englands all time appearence maker and goalscorer . Didn't Kevin Keegan get caught in a car with another mans wife?

Didn't Shilton dive over one in that game the Poles won to deny us a place. They all make mistakes. He was a terrific keeper non the less. I thought Ray Clemmence was better though.

The real question that everyone is ignoring is, if they had to swap roles would Rooney be a better keeper than Shilts would be as a center forward?
Discuss.

Can't be bothered reading all the posts on this thread but Rooney winning 100 caps says everything that is wrong with English football. He is a good footballer but compared with the other "centurians" like Bobby Moore he is a minnow, An average footballer at International level..

Think its fair to say hes been around in an era where we have had a real dearth of good strikers. If you go back to the 90s there were players like Fowler, Les Ferdinand, Andy Cole, Ian Wright ,Shearer, Sherringham Owen, Philips etc. Rooneys's not had much competition. Maybe hes had an easier path to 100 caps than the other centurians but hes not a minnow. He must have a sideboard in his house rammed full of winners medals and acolades. Minnows don't have that. In 30 years time all we'll see on him are clips of his best moments like we do with the likes of Moore and likewise he'll be remembered just for them.

Rooney is 100% an England legend. Played though many tournaments barely fit, has done everything possible to make his England legacy as good as it could (or can) be. Regardless of whether I like him as a person or not, he is one of the best to ever put on the white jersey.
We've won one world cup, nothing else. Most England legends have won nowt.

Pretty much the same league for me. Shilts wins as he didn't have to procure his extra marital sex, and left grannies alone. Plus Rooneys hair thing and the way he names his kids versus Shilts driving into a lamppost while drunk makes it a tough call.
Shilton, just.

Shilton was great at Nottingham Forest in the late seventies and presumably before that. (I don't go back that far). Being outjumped by a dwarf in 1986 should have signalled the end, but for some reason his reputation kept him in the team for four more years. Bobby Robson's biggest and most costly mistake. It was like watching a guy from the old folks home in that semi final against Germany. The deflected goal he never left the ground. You couldn't have got a cigarette paper between his feet and the ground. As for the penalties, it is literally the worst goalkeeping performance in a shoot out in the history of the game. In all five cases the ball had hit the net before he even twitched (which is all he did). If they'd have just hit one down the middle you never know, but no chance other than that. He may as well have been paralysed from the neck down. Chris Woods was pretty good too, that's the shame of it all.

Agree with most of that captain but the point I was making is he is a minnow in International terms and his trophy cabinet might be full but not with International honours. You only have to look at how Cristiano Ronaldo has progressed in comparison to Rooney. It's not Rooneys fault it is the fault of the English FA who have mismanaged our national game for years. Rooney is the best of a generation which says lots about our game.

Rooney is the best of a generation which says lots about our game. Rooneys got the same amount of international honours as Ronaldo though. Judging players by whether theyve won world cups or euros is very slanted towards those players who happen to be a nationality that wins competitions. Ronaldo won't win anything no matter how good he is . Messi probably won't. and I doubt Rooney will. best never even made a finals. theres plenty of pretty average players whove got winners medals. Club footballs a bit different as your ability decides what standard club you play for. Think the blame isn't with the FA but the Premier league myself. Having the richest league is a really bad thing for the national side.

Especially the bit about the worst keeping performance in a shoot out. That accolade in an England shirt belongs to David James in 2004 for a countless number of pathetic sloth drops to the wrong way. Obviously as good at reading penalties as he is accounting.
