Not sure that is the sort of colourful language Fry was talking about.. Context is everything. Personal abuse, whether it contains swear words or not, should be banned. No grey area here for me. Banter is something else, but using the odd swear word on here occasionally isn't a problem for me, as long as it done sparingly. Gratuitous and/or pointless swearing has no place here, but the odd one to make a humourous point is okay for me. And sometimes using an occasional swear word is the best way to get a point across - particularly if you have a strong feeling about something. Again, this should be done sparingly, but there are times when only a swear word will do! As a general rule I don't swear on here, but the odd one has snuck out occasionally. I do think, even though I am not bothered by swearing myself, that if there is evidence that posters are leaving the board it needs looking at. KSNE was a long standing poster from the distant Rivals days and its a shame she no longer contributes. That said, is this an isolated case, or are there other examples? Online message boards are transient by nature so we would need hard evidence that we probably don't have. Perhaps its best to judge swearing on an individual basis rather than having a blanket ban. In that way those abusing the board or its members will be weeded out. I don't pretend to have the answers - just my thoughts.

What is the point in posting foul mouthed abuse on this site? the Saddo posting is full of course remarks foul language and each contributing member should in my opinion simply be banned. My Mum always used to say swearing was a sign of ignorance,as it proves you have nothing worth saying I am not a prude but I am fed up having to read mindless postings from people who should know better Come on lads clean it up “The sort of twee person who thinks swearing is in any way a sign of a lack of education or a lack of verbal interest is just a fucking lunatic.” Stephen Fry

I agree. It's only rarely I swear but when I do I display it like so - f**k, p**s etc. I feel that if I am going to emphasise my point by swearing then I think that's the best way to go about. At least that way it shows that you're taking others that are strongly against bad language into consideration, and you displaying a little bit more manners than just full blown swearing.

The Sun's method is pretty funny - asterices on "t**s" followed by a photo of an actual pair. Ridiculous Victorian censoriousness.

start by taking the swearing off a football posting site and the ills of the world will follow suit, or at least not seem so bad? audience with a shedload of kids in it watch Lee Evans(the nations comedian) swear over a 80 times? ? remember he is funny and loveable.... swearing my friends, is the very least of our worries... Someone on here called me ignorant the other day..thats an insult, that face to face would certainly have had a reaction, being called a c-nt is merely throw away and usually totally ignorable perspective and context, people...

Shame them same females don't stop going to the games too My parents aren't local so I went to quite a few Man Utd games when I was a kid. It was the early 90s when they started selling out the stadium consistently. I heard the best bit of sexism once from a guy sat behind: "it's all very well women coming to the football, but there's lads outside without a ticket."

there are situations that scream out for swearing..
mindless bureaucracy ...
airports..see above.
drivers who try to kill you..
Question Time....
Prime Ministers Question Time..
George Galloway..
hell fire this list is going to be far too long..
life in general, at times.. its what swearing was invented to cover, normal language sometimes just does not cut it, and the clever language you try to use goes way over the head of the moron who caused you the grief in the first place..

I agree totally with the majority of this thread - the massive silent majority I suspect - who are fed up with the swearing, personal animosity and aggression that takes over so many of the threads. I don't know if it's machismo or inadequacy but there's a minority that don't seem too interested in the actual arguments or discussion about Town but are much happier showing that they're "proper" football supporters because they can swear or threaten. In the end I don't think things will change as the board seems to have been taken over in recent times but look at other team's forums (or at this one a few years ago) and you'll see the difference. I know a lot of supporters who don't bother posting now, or even reading the board, because of the way things have gone.

I agree with this post. I shy of using full words when I'm angry or annoyed and very occasionally resort to fookin in an effort to show respect and in a conscious attempt to avoid causing offence. People's points are diluted for me when they resort to being foul mouthed, threatening or abusive. That said, I can occasionally be guilty of hypocrisy.

there is enough that do for me..enough spread of thoughts/opinions/ideas..
enough daftness and humour..
people trying to do things to help, wether its appreciated or not..
goodwill and comments when they are required..
animosity is short lived and harmless, its football and virtually everything about it can make you swear at times..
we love it..

Obviously an age thing if Lee Evans was doing a show in my garden I would close the curtains Bob Monkhouse never swore but was very blue, M&W the best comedians in the last 50 years did not swear I don't disagree that it can be used some times and can be funny some times EG the most appropriate use of the F word The captain of the Titanic saying to his crew where did all this ------- water come from? Or Custer asking where did all these ------- Indians come from? But most of the foul mouthed posts on here are neither clever or funny and I don't honestly see what is to be gained by posting the words ---/ ---

Swearing....time and place. That's it in a nutshell. Football forum that's ok. Swearing in front of young kids or the older generation is a no no for me. In front of male work mates of course, in front of female workmates...not for me. Maybe I'm old fashioned.
