.....so why do we set up so defensively?
Two defensive midfielders. Butterfield shackled. WIng backs shackled. Wingers unable to roam. It's doing sod all for our goal difference.

Same at Bournemouth but we got lucky so it was a great effort. It was embarrassing watching players doing the polar opposite of busting a gut to get forward

Honestly genuinely puzzled as to how we can be so utterly useless in defence after 3 years in this division, must have had bottom 3 goals against column every single season?

We have the second worst goals against after Blackpool. Not sure what the answer is. We attack and we get done on the break (i.e. Wolves at home) and we play more conservatively and we ship goals anyway.
Do we continue to play conservatively and hope to grind out results or do we loosen the shackles a bit? We seem to stuck between a rock and a hard place as we seem to ship goals however we play.
I still feel our better performances (and results) have come when we've played with more freedom. Sure, we still concede, but we have scored a few in these games too.
Its not time to panic, but we've now had two heavy defeats on the bounce and we need to break the cycle against Rotherham. We have a healthy gap at the moment, but we don't want to get onto a losing run as we have in previous seasons.

We could potentially have a back four of Carroll, Wallace, Hudson and Edgar on Saturday!

It's as simple as the two centre backs being poor. Wallace has absolutely no business starting games at this level and Hudson, for all the hype, has been a downgrade on Peter Clarke. Add to that Gerrard, who was one of our best players last season, falling out of favour and it's easy to see why the defensive record would suffer. Lynch is ok if his head is in the game and he's fit.

Unfortunately at the time our full backs wee having a tricky time, smith in particular. I don't have issues with Hudson and lynch - I think they are decent at this level and their track record says so..........we just have no replacements and lynch is the new Vaughan! Add to that no quality full backs on our books - Robinson is one and has improved massively just in time to join qpr at this level in the summer- bummer! The further issue for me is midfield - I don't know what coadys best position is, Hogg has had a dreadful time with injury again and butterfield is great going one way only. The rest are either stop gaps like goburn and Edgar or unproven young lads. It all adds up to talent par excellence at times and infuriating rubbish at others! Big big job in the summer for this club - there has to be intent or folks will opt to pick and choose home games and travel away for the day a la Fulham and Charlton. It used to be all about how town did during the game and the result .....I fear more and more go now - less frequently but when they do it's a day out like the races or the cricket and the match becomes merely the conduit for a group day out.

The answer is better quality players and a manager that has a clue what he is doing, so going by the owners new policy we are goosed!

Agree with most of your comments, except to say that Robinson was very poor at Charlton & is very overated in my opinion. Massive rebuilding job in the summer, we now have a small squad 7 are a little thread bare currently. Don't believe that Smith, Wallace are good enough for the Championship - UTT.

Hudson and wallace aren't a good partnership. Wallace is very in and out of form and Hudson hasn't improved the team at all. Hes on a downward slope and IMO is a poor signing.
Ok, there may be reasons we don't fully know about, (and a lot of what gets said is irrelevant nonsense IMO anyway ) but the big issue we've had this season is that the best DEFENDER* at the club has barely played a game. Whether thats his fault, or the clubs fault, or as is probably the case, a mixture of both- the truth is we've suffered defensively because of it.
* thats DEFENDER- ie stopping the other team scoring. Not spreading passes around, shooting from distance, dribbling the ball out into midfield etc - just DEFENDING- what our goals against column says we haven't been doing very well this season without him!
