How about buy em low, develop them, keep them & let us have the benefit. What if they want to leave? They will refuse to sign a contract extension and leave for free.

What other model is there with our fan base? As a business we're run extremely well. What's burnley or Bournemouths fan base? Burnley are the perfect example of a club getting promoted using this strategy.

Yes. The club at no stage has said 'right town fans, that's your lot for this transfer window'. For all we know, they could spend that £2m on a couple of gems. Also want to point out that when Clayton left this board nearly went into major meltdown. In came Butterfield and he didn't turn out to bad did he? Norwood went, coady in. Let's not get carried away with this no ambition shite, we are only 3 days into the transfer window and there is no proof that the club arent looking to bring any improvements in. Chill the fuck out bitches. I don't think we need to spend millions on players. If we can keep doing what we're doing we can buy for a six figure sum and sell for a 7 figure sum. I actually think our strategy may change a little now, that the academy players are coming of age, in that rather than buying young players, the young players will come from the academy and we'll sign older players like Whitehead who can cover the ground for a year or two until the lads from the academy are ready. No point spending loads on the academy and developing good players if we aren't gonna use them.

Some players will want to leave and if they're nearing the end of their contract and it suits the club then cash in, but if we aim to keep hold of our better players then we might just progress at a more rapid rate than we have been doing and if so its less likely that they'll want to move on.

Or, maybe the better players will go through poor form or get injured & their value will decrease. Every player has a value & if that value is met or bettered, then you sell. The key is to know what that value is!

How about buy em low, develop them, keep them & let us have the benefit. How about buy em low, develop them, sell them & let us have the benefit of money to invest in the squad. Buying more players low & investing the money again. Selling Clayton & Norwood enabled us to bring in Butterfield & Coady. Every single year has been better than the last, ever since Dean Hoyle took over. Suggests to me that the business model is working.

I said this on another thread and I apologise if anyone has said it already, but I think the way we go about the players coming in is changing. In the past since Dean has been here we've been signing young players and selling them on and its worked well, but I think now is the time to start playing some of the lads from the academy. They will be the Rhodes, the Pilks and the Coadys and the players we bring in will be older and more experienced and possibly hold down a place in the team for a year or two before one of the academy lads takes their place. I believe our last 3 transfers were Hudson (over 30), Miller (28), Whitehead (33)and Davidson (24). I think this is the way its gonna go from now on, as theirs no point having the academy if these young lads never get a chance. Twelve months ago, I couldn't see how some of them were ever going to break into the team, now I can see it happening very shortly.

I think part of the reason the club were bringing young players in rather than promoting from the academy, was because the academy wasn't producing youngsters who could compete even at the top end of L1. The club made a lot of changes with how the academy is run, both in terms of the coaches and expanding where we recruit from. Obviously that takes time to filter through, but hopefully in the coming years we'll start to see the benefit of it.

The academy is really producing now, we're just waiting for them to make the step up to the first team. Could be that some are played in the coming season, could be that we loan some out (as we have been doing). Its gonna be interesting to see if we sign anyone under 24 this summer. I'm guessing we wont, even though its been the norm for the last 6 years.

People know that if we get a half decent offer we'll sell, however if we had a season or two of aiming to keep our best players whilst being smart in the transfer market and continuing to pick up the bargains that we have in the past, then we might just produce a team that's capable of really challenging in this division.

This. Would be nice to buy low and build a team of these bargains and only sell when stupid offers start coming in

The attendances were crap then as well. Top (not just near the top, actually top) of the league and getting attendances of 13-14k. Would our attendances really increase so much, even if we went shit or bust? People presumably also know that we will only sell when we do get a decent offer, and that the money will be reinvested in quality replacements. If selling Clayton and Norwood & replacing with Coady and Butterfield, and each year performing better than the last, 8 years running is putting people off coming to watch HTFC, then I suggest Deano sells up and lets Carlos Slim and the Koch brothers take over.

Those were the days when we still counted the number of people actually attending the game, unlike today's gates which includes all those season ticket holders (20%) who have stayed at home. The standard answers from those who think the sun shines out of Hoyle's arse are that he might as well sell up or would you rather go back to the Davy days of league one? I want neither of those but I do want to see us challenging in the top half rather than inching up year on year and calling it progress. Progress to me would be hanging onto our better players, adding a few bargains along the way (Coady, Butterfield etc) and having a bloody good go at making the top six. Clubs such as Bournemouth, Blackpool & Burnley, all of whom are no bigger than us have done it in recent years so why not us?

The last 4 posts sum up why people pull their hair out at the stupidity people talk on social media. Stupid because you don't agree with it? More because it isn't grounded in reality. Have you read the accounts thread? I know it's an obvious question, but where does the extra money come from to fund not selling a player and still spending on more signings? Certainly not from the net money we would make from 2,000 season tickets, if that even is how many we've lost. You give Burnley and Blackpool as examples - they got promoted using the same business model we are. Easy to forget the year Burnley got promoted they sold Charlie Austin, a far better and more important player for them than Coady was for us. Always baffles me how people can acknowledge we're finishing higher up the league each season and then claim we're not progressing.

He probably expects that anyway, but the point I'm trying to make is that if we hang onto our better players then we might eventually have the success that would enable the club to survive without him propping us up.

What if we go out and get a midfield maestro for £2m? We don't know what players the club have identified yet. Town fans were outraged we sold Clayton for money plus butterfield. Without that extra money we may not have got Coady, who we've just sold for a profit. One sale doesn't mean the end of our season.

Have our cake AND eat it you mean? I think all that dodgy Jock beer must be addling your brain! And anyway, IF we kept the best players, how on earth would all those (you know, the ones you keep banging on about) gems in the development squad ever make the team?

Yes were finishing higher up the league but at the rate we're going we might just challenge for the play offs in five years time. If we really are progressing then why when we had over 9,000 season ticket holders in 2012/3 do we have less than 7,000 now (club's figures a couple of weeks ago)? Its probably a number of things such as selling your better players when a decent offer comes in, season ticket prices etc. I don't have all the answers. Last season we probably had our best midfield since the early Bruce days, but we've now let go of two of them (Gobern & Coady) and whilst Whitehead has a lot of experience, do we really expect him at 33 to get up down the pitch like Coady did? We might drop lucky and pick up somebody equally as good or better than Coady on the cheap. The way we finished last season, I was optimistic that with two or three quality signings (a couple of defenders included) then we might have a crack at the top ten at least next season, but what happens if we get a decent offer for Butterfield, Wells, Vaughan etc? If we sell then I see us going backwards again.

Yeah, but he's already putting that in (& more). If we didn't sell the likes of Clayton & Coady etc. then he'd have to put even more in. Why should he do that (even if he could) when the people of Huddersfield won't support him in sufficient numbers to make a difference? No one wants to lose our best players, but it's an absolute necessity in this day & age in this division for Town. The fact that we do is sustaining us in the Championship, it's as simple as that. Granted, it's unlikely to lead to a shot at promotion, but that can only be achieved with a very significant cash injection, which simply isn't there at the moment. The club explain this time & again, yet people constantly question it. The last 6 or 7 seasons have all shown an improvement, which is the best evidence that the business model is working perfectly.

What I'm saying is what if we do. Let's just wait and see before we criticise. We haven't bought as bad as what some claim in the last few years. Let's be patient.
