We have certainly improved in terms of performance but results have been disappointing. To be fair to Wagner he has had to work with the players left to him and not being able to bring in his four targets in January left the squad a bit thin.Agree with Colt in his summing up of the players, too many are not good enough and I can see big changes in the Summer. I am confident we will improve next season and a top ten finish is achievable, lot's to look forward to. Lastly if we are not keeping Huws, Matmour and Patterson next season then don't play them against Brentford, have a look at players who will be here next season.UTT

So all the plaudits and all the praise we get from opposing fans and various managers, journalists etc means we are not actually progressing in any way shape or form? OK. Its of no comfort to me that opposition fans/managers patronizingly ruffle our hair and say well done, you played well but.....you still lost. Think that is the main issue with us at the minute, its a lot better but the results don't back it up, until we get results in a consistent basis then we'll all remain frustrated. I am not frustrated, I have been entertained - from Sheff Wed onwards, with every match I have attended (not at Bristol).

We are not progressing at all He has been in charge a mere 5 months. Are you expecting miracles. At least give him a year before comments like that.

There has been some better football with a genera feeling that even better things to come. But feelings alone cannot be the measure. The squad is thinner than that cheap sandwich ham and the results show that despite improved performances we are an also ran. Physically we are fitter but remain lightweight, there again we have no option to field the lightweights like lolly patto even wells because they are our better players but when they are all on together your attack has no physicality to it hence why i think we struggle at corners. I dont think we can survive losing any more quality however and you could say that progress would be for once holding on to our better players whilst simultaneously strengthening other areas. I think we have the manager (despite his liking to start bunn and hudson ) progress now is down to the actions of DH and then hoping everything comes together. Far far too early to have labelled the wagner thing a revolution hence why i think op used the wankfest comment. Mind you half the pratts on here are dickless anyway I agree with your comments overall terrierpark, although your use of language, leaves a lot to be desired - UTT.

Therein lies the problem where people have a platform to vent and like a disease it infects what should be entertainment. Long gone is the time when football was a way for the working man to get out of the house and have a good old day out whatever the result and it's been replaced by analysts and doomsday merchants who would find faults whatever.

I go on gut feeling. It feels much more positive than with Powell in charge.

How do we assess progression? Very simple, league position.

You're not bothered whether we win or lose? The topic was frustration, not whether I prefer we win. I am a realist, not many football teams can win; entertainment avoids frustration. I would prefer a lot of things, having the SS for home fans & NS for away, standing at games as I did in 1969/70 - when we won, and of course winning. And I forgot, a good atmosphere.

Is that the limits of your understanding? It's a fact isn't it? Started to write a reply about progress being measured in so many different ways and then I thought 'why am I bothering, why do I need to convince this guy?'. I don't. Can't be arsed any more. Think what you like.

The most worrying part is that many of those inconsistent performing town players who were on the field at Bristol are expected to start a so called Wagner revolution next season.
Should we be worried, or just live in hope

Yes, it's a fact that we are still in the lower echelons of the division. We have made absolutely no progress whatsoever, in any way shape or form. You win. And seeing as you are always right, there's no need for me to debate with you ever again. Result all round.

In answer to the thread title, use your gut feeling and a balanced view of the football being offered up.
Lot's still to do, but plenty to look forward to.

Fuck me we lost 4-0 to Bristol City in a complete dead rubber in the second to last game of the season. By all means question this season but this petty illogical arguing amongst fans is just daft. With a full pre season and his own players Wagner can take us to the next level. Let's face it if he can keep this bunch of misfits up that Powell got together then he could have us winning the champions league in 3 seasons.
I didn't see Watford fans whinging like a bunch of babies when we stuffed them at their spot in the last game 2 seasons ago... they went and got themselves promoted instead!
Optimistic, pessimistic or on the fence it does not matter. We are safe, games now mean nothing and we have plenty to look forward to next season.

As far as I'm concerned, the game against Birmingham City was our first pre-season game of the 2016/17 season. Bristol City was the 2nd and Brentford will be the 3rd. I want us to win obviously, but I see these games' biggest value as a learning exercise for Wagner and the players alike.
This season, losing Coady, Butterfield and Smithies has been a blow and barring some strange results on the last day this is going to be the first season since DH took over where we didn't do as well as in the previous year. Still, we have coped. It's not been a disaster. It's a step back but with cause for optimism about next season.
Progress is defined for me by looking at where we were 12 months ago and questioning whether we're doing better or worse.
Some people will always be frustrated no matter what happens. We're holding our own in a division full of clubs with bigger budgets than ours. How many people said they'd be happy once we're out of league one?
