I wouldn't call him a "holding midfielder " but a quick question for you . Do you think Manchester City (richest club in the world with Guardiola, arguably the best coach in the world ) would continue to entrust htfc to develop Mooy if it was apparent to them that we were playing him wildly out of position ? All this Aussie conjecture about Mooy has to be amongst the biggest pile of bollocks I've ever read on here .. and I've read a lot ( and to be fair contributed a lot ) Depends on the terms of their loan agreement. Also time will tell. Mooy played more forward here at Melbourne City and was impressive. No harm in trying him out further forward. You may be pleasantly suprised. Talk is cheap. Here's proof of the sage wisdom of we Australians. I'm assuming Melbourne pissed the league last season as a result of playing mooy in the correct role ? PS htfc, perennial struggles are currently 2ND in the league despite our bungling idiocy

He's already scored a miles better goal than any of those against Leeds- where he was quality in and around both boxes. Also time and again there was acres of space around the box in the video. The commentator even says no pressure on mooy at one point. You don't get that in the English championship. I'm not playing billy big bollocks and looking down my nose at the A league but clearly mooy has made a step up. I would imagine he's been told by pep to improve his defensive game and boy has he listened. Brilliant player and a joy to watch him read, intercept turn away from danger and then lay a pass off starting a counter attack. Can't wait until Tuesday where I expect him to have another very strong game.

Joe said: Good point re. City. There are two better options at CAM at little old Hudds
Interesting that you could make that assessment after never watching him play there.
I agree though...very tough to measure up to payne and palmers 1 assist each.

It's true that we've not seen Mooy in the Number 10 role here, but we have seen him as a midfield playmaker and he's bloody good there. Since you'd drop Payne/Palmer to put Mooy in that position, who is there in our squad that's better at the midfield playmaker role than Mooy? I can see Billing making that case possible when he's fit & we don't know much about Paurevic yet - maybe we'll know more when he's up to full fitness. In the meantime I'm quite happy with Mooy where he is.

Disappointing loss on Saturday. Pity we Australians only get highlights. I feel tempted to say that had Mooy been played forward you might have snatched a draw however in deference to the UK supporters here I won't make such a comment. Very undisciplined effort by VLP. Incidentally are there any ways of watching past matches? Do Hudders matches get torrented? cheers Peter Do they get torrented? A torrent of abuse, generally from the usual suspects, yes.

Why do people who don't watch him play still keep saying we are playing him as a holding midfielder. This is as tedious as Otium's goals scored stats.

For the final time, Mooy's game fits perfectly with where he is being played - box-to-box link between defence and attack. It allows him to dictate the game. He would not suit being played further forwards, in the way that we set up, as we need our front 4 to interchange - we don't really play with a defined #9, #10, #7, #11, they all swap round. It's why we're so hard to defend against.

Central midfield is all about balance - and the balance of Hogg, Mooy and Palmer/Payne in their current positions is just about as good as I've seen in 50+ years of watching Town. Both Hogg and Mooy are great with the ball in front of them. Payne and Palmer are best with the ball played up to them. They are effectively second strikers at times in this system - and I don't think that would suite Mooy.

I'm assuming Melbourne pissed the league last season as a result of playing mooy in the correct role ? PS htfc, perennial struggles are currently 2ND in the league despite our bungling idiocy They finished 4th out of 10 teams. And that was with 2 or the best 3 players in the league (Mooy & Bruno Fornaroli). Despite playing some nice football recently, they're a shit club and always have been. Now that they have money, they attract the best players (they still have to abide by a salary cap, but there are some exceptions) and still nobody goes to see them. They're were setup just so that Melbourne Victory could have a local derby - they're as plastic as a club can be.

Mooy doesn't have the pace to play further forward in our system. We need those players to be chasing defenders and interchanging from the wings to the centre and in some cases up front. He'd get outpaced by most full-backs and would be ineffective in that position. I can see why he would suit the Number 10 role in certain situations because his vision and passing ability is fantastic, but we need something different from our Number 10. I thought he was exceptional once again on Saturday so as long as he's putting in those kinds of performances, he can stay there for me.

In the second half on Saturday Mooy was on the left wing a couple of times, either from open play or because he took a corner from that side. He needed to bring the ball closer before crossing the ball in because he was too far out, and the full-back closed him down quickly. Because he isn’t quick and he doesn’t have a trick the full-back got tight to him because he knew he wouldn’t get in behind him.
He generally got the cross in but once or twice he didn’t – if that’s Palmer in that position the defender backs off because if he got too close he’d absolutely skin him and then he's in the box. That for me sums up why Mooy is our box to box midfield playmaker and why we have Palmer and Payne taking it in turns in the hole.

What about the one where he was laid on the ground on his back, took the ball down perfectly with one foot and passed it off to Smith with the other foot? Worth the entrance fee alone. He has got a bit of speed over 3 or 4 paces and obviously upstairs as well. Don't know if they keep stats on it but I would think Mooy "beats" more players than anyone else in the team. He beats them and they don't even realise they have been beaten as he has already knocked the ball off to someone else! He needs to improve his free kicks though - shockers at Reading.

He fell over and managed to lay off a pass while on the floor. Great awareness and balance but not a trick that will skin a full back in the corner! He's skillful and can make space for himself very well, but he's not going to drop a shoulder and leave a man for dead. That's what we need for the number 10 because that stretches the team and means he can commit defenders and open up space for others. Otherwise he's reliant on the movement of the front three which limits what we can do as a team. I'd also argue that he's not really got much speed over 3 or 4 paces, but because he has good balance and timing he can make enough space for him to pick a pass.

He can drop a shoulder with the best of them - and it usually produces a result, although I agree he's not going to run away from many. By producing a result I mean doing something useful - rather than dropping the other shoulder like VLP and Scanz would do, and then trip over their feet!

As a number 10 in our system he needs to be comfortable playing as a winger, and Mooy can't. He doesn't have the combination of tricks and acceleration to break through a defence. That's why he isn't playing at 10 and won't be. We'll agree to disagree and move on.

There are two better options at CAM at little old Hudds so I reckon 100% mooy playing deeper will have been agreed by pep & wag. Also pep is extremely methodical/obsessive so anyone who thinks mooy is just playing where Wagner fancies is crazy. Carrying it even further could anyone see mooy getting in ahead of Sterling, Silva or De Bruyne?! Whereas you could see mooy coming on for ten minutes for Fernandinho. I would just add that mooy looks very at home in centre mid. So he's either he's very very disciplined or else doesn't actually have a desperate drive to get into the opposition box like Payne and Palmer (genuine no.10's) do. Edit. Also re. That video Mooy can do all of that free kicks set pieces final balls from where he's playing now. He's not a DCM. He plays am all round midfielder role. For me though his passing capability is his no.1 asset, followed not far behind by his reading and tackling. I agree and in a lot of highlight reels' (all we can get till Town is on tv) he is playing his game. I commented earlier because he was reserved, stayed back at all times. But he seems to be all over the place in defence and attack, no problems from me, Wagner has worked him out.
