Just be aware that visitor travel visas for Russia tend to be up to 30 days...so if you arrive on or before day 1 and end up for some freakish reason deciding to extend your stay until the final, then you WILL likely be arrested/fined or held for a court hearing when you try and exit. (You can extend your visa, but only whilst it's still valid). If you can't leave by your due date, you'll never leave - it'll be the Salt mines for you, deep in the frozen wastes of Kamchatka or Irkutsk ..Take a pullover just in case Great advice. I suspect it might drop a bit chilly in those parts. At the very least, bring a tank top.

As well as the violent risks facing fans it could also be quite possible that English fans get arrested and have trumped up charges applied. They then become, pardon the pun 'political footballs' as the UK try to get them released. As if the UK as you say would try and get English football fans released. They’d assume guilt regardless of charges and leave them in jail. Ordinarily, and if they were in other countries, I would agree. Not sure with Russia though due to all the current bad feeling between the two governments.

I think you are overplaying “bad feeling between the governments” . It’s diplomatic to ing and fro ing . It doesn’t mean British people are at risk of “trumped up charges “ etc And underplaying the fact that the Russian government will do everything in their power to ensure this tournament goes well . It’s massively political . For the glory of the regime . So they aren’t going to want to preside over a disaster

Boris Johnsons deliberate, premeditated and thought out "mistakes" are boring in the extreme, usually designed to deflect attention from the issue to himself. That said I wouldn't go, I'll struggle to even watch it on TV.

Absolutely. And name the last “games” of any description that weren’t attempting to portray the government of the time to it’s greater glory

I've drummed up enough enthusiasm to download a pdf wallchart of the fixtures but that's about it for the time being. I'll be on holiday for the quarter and semi finals, though I'm not expecting England to still be involved by then.

The Assistant Chief constable in charge of football policing has warned England "fans" about going to Russia and how that any bad behaviour could be met with police violence and long prison sentences. Don't give them a heads-up you buffoon!

Bit of an aside but watched the Oscar winning documentary ‘Icarus’ last week about Russian state sponsored doping. Absolutely amazing film, a historical document as much as a documentary, highly reccomended

Would love to travel Russia, but not during the World Cup. Possible battering both on and off the field.

Don't give them a heads-up you buffoon! Indeed - this could be an opportunity for us to rid our country of quite a few undesirables masquerading as football supporters. Get them banged up in Siberia at no cost to the British taxpayer - bingo! If you hate football hooliganism (why wouldn't you?) and 100% don't want to get involved in any then you just wouldn't risk going to this world cup.

Whilst I agree with all the aforementioned criticism of Russia, it's only fair to say they ARE the purveyors of THE finest car-crash compilations in the world. I shall be spending summer watching these on YouTube...

Oz are saying boycotting it ? It’s not going to happen - but if England decided to boycott I’d be happy if Australia stood with them and gave it a miss as well.

Absolutely amazing film, a historical document as much as a documentary, highly reccomended Agree - watched it a couple of weeks ago. What starts as a simple experiment by the film maker/investigator to see if drugs can help him improve in serious amateur cycling races changes half way through to finding himself at the centre of the Russian doping scandal as he works with the main Russian whistleblower. An absolutely fascinating watch.
