Very sad news for me Ian and Henry Cockburn were a brilliant management team. I missed 2 home games from 1964 to 1972 and used to hire my own coaches for away games.
Took a Longstaffs coach to Middlesbrough when we drew 1-1 (or was it 0-0) to clinch promotion-what a night that was.
I also hitchhiked to Oxford that day which was often the easiest, cheapest way in those days.
We slept in a field near Silverstone on the Friday night and walked 18 miles on the Saturday morning.
We were about 10 miles from Oxford with about 90 minutes to kick off so I knocked on a house door and offered a guy petrol money to take us to the ground which he did. I seem to think that Ron Atkinson played for Oxford that day.
Always used to meet a guy from Hecky Grammar called Russell Langton who also hitch hiked to every game--nick name "Hairy" cos he started shaving at about 10 years old.
Not seen Russ for 30 years and wish I knew what happened to him- if anybody knows of his whereabouts.
RIP Ian- we must do something tomorrow.

He managed the first town team that I watched in 1970, unfortunately it was only down from there for me but will always remember that great cup run that took us to Birmingham City in the 6th round. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_GreavesSeeing that he was born in Oldham and as an ex Oldham player, surely a minutes applause will be carried out perfectly. RIP and condolences to his familly.

Used to live up Bradley mills rd as a kid, the team used to practice on the gravel car park across from the main entrance. There used to be a large wooden board stood up in the middle, for shooting practice, I used to field the mis-hit shots (and there were a few). Mr Greaves, as all the players called him, gave me a tanner to get some sweets, as the lazy players should get their own wayward efforts. Ended up with Towns DIY man Fred (Two ton Fred from Clayton West & he drove the Terriers Van) watching from the roadside. I'll tell you what the players never seemed to swear in those days.

We were a fit side in those days-he made the players run up and down Kilner Bank(before the trees arrived) and he used to be a great motivator and he was the boss..

That season we went up was magic. To go away to Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea and the like with your team and holding your own was the greatest joy in the World. We knew we would lose more than we won, but to be up among the best for two seasons was some of the best Saturday afternoons of my life.
God rest you Ian, You were a giant of a man.

Greavsie was a great manager but more than that he was a good man.
Win it for him tomorrow Town.

one of our greatest managers, performed miracles with no/very little financial backing; we would have stayed in Div 1 for many a season with a little financial backing as we had the backbone of an excellent team, with several on the fringe of (England) international honours, who knows what might have happened if he had been allowed to put the dream partnership together of gowling and worthington? he finally did at bolton which worked a treat and the rest, as they say, is history. had the privilege to see all home games that 69/70 season as well as many away - thanks for the memory Ian - RIP

Top bloke, brilliant manager, treated like crap by the board. Some of his methods were revolutionary at the time. Forty years ago he got us into the top flight and should have been better recognised by the club. (Bin Lid? ... didn't know there was anyone as old as me on the board, Deepc!) You obviously didn't read the "Cowshed Reunion" thread too closely then It was mentioned by a few posters (including me). Life begins at 50 mate. What a great interview. Thanks for posting that sd. My mate in Uni was from Bolton. When they bought Frank Worthington, we went up there to watch him play against L666s in the League Cup. Communication wasn't what it is these days - he was cup-tied, so didn't play. Had a good time though. We were in with the L666s fans, and my mate's Dad was making comments all through the game. Then a L666s fan says to him sarcastically "An' who did thee play for then ?" My mate's Dad tells him truthfully "Blackburn Rovers". That shut the pi!!0ck up. Those were the days. My eulogy to Ian.
